Painter. Sculptor. Performance Artist. Let's add to that: raconteur, as in fabulous spinner of tales. For a young man working in a brewery whose loftiest aim was to be a professional golfer, achieving success as a working artist speaks volumes to the power of serendipity and playful fate. John credits his early training to Giacomo Petri whose San Francisco art school cum boarding house changed the direction of his life in the 60s. Becoming an artist was abhorrent to his father who, having come through the Depression, was far more concerned that his only son be able to support himself. Many years later, the contents of a family hope chest would reveal a hidden side of his father and provide an ironic twist to John's story. Although performance art dominated his early career, John has always painted and sculpted. His works reflect the blurred edges of reality and, often, through the use of bold color splashes, the joy he feels in life. In John's words: "I made a lot from a little. I'm having a f#@$&*% ball."
