Dear All,
Happy New Year!!
As you might have noticed the Café Royal site has changed / gone. Between Christmas and New Year we had a flood due to a burst pipe caused by the frost and snow. It didn't affect Café Royal but my personal collection of over 600 books and zines was wiped out. This has made me rethink a lot of things. My own practise, Café Royal, printed matter itself and how valid it is in the 'digital age'. Obviously with a 'real' book you have the smell, touch and feel of the ink and paper - that can't be reproduced digitally, so it will always have a place, and I will continue to publish books, but not quite as I have been.
I don't like being angry about things I can't control, so I'm using the flood as a fresh start. The studio will be back up and running in a few weeks. There have been some projects I've wanted to work on over the past few years but haven't been able to because Café Royal takes up so much time. Café Royal has always been a part of my own practise but it grew to become more than that and now I want to reign it back in. I will still be publishing work by other artists, just fewer.
As you will see, I have moved the Café Royal archive to my own site. All the titles I've published over five years are now available to look at online, a few are available to buy and a few more are still available from stores around the world. I'm interested in having all our books available free to look at and a few available to buy if people want a real copy. My latest project, and the last title to be published by Café Royal for now is '001'. A project I announced a few weeks ago, in an edition of 5. I offered the publication for sale, and only now that the books have been posted have I put the details online. The buyers didn't know whet they were buying but knew they were very limited. There are a couple of other projects coming this week, a reprint of my Calton Hill zine and Rear Window by Erik van der Weijde, and a long zine cal
led
101112 which is a selection of photographs I took during the final two months of 2010.
If you are interested in pre-ordering a copy of project 002 please email me.
As the studio becomes functional again I'll be intouch with new projects.
Thanks again,
