Heine |

Starts 14 January
Again
this year two exhibitions of pop photography will be opening in the Noorderlicht
Photogallery
during the Eurosonic Noorderslag music festival. POPVIEW 2011 shows the work
of the eight nominees for the Lex van Rossen Award 2011. The solo exhibition 'I
Love You but I’ve Chosen Rock' by Olaf Heine reads like a visual diary,
with intriguing portraits of international pop and rock
greats.
Opening: Thursday, 13 January, at 5:00 p.m., by Luck Fonz III,
songwriter and performer. DJ 645 provides the musical setting, and we have
a special acoustic performance from the Danish band Annasaid.

Photography project on globalisation and
sugar |
|
|
Call for submissions
After a
research phase Noorderlicht has started the documentary photography project The
Sweet and Sour Story of Sugar. In this project we take up the challenge of
investigating the forces of the ‘global economy’ from the
perspective of one commodity: sugar.
The focus in The Sweet and Sour Story of Sugar is on sugar production in The
Netherlands and its former colonies, Surinam, Indonesia and north-east Brazil.
Where Surinam and Indonesia once used to be major players in the sugar industry,
now they cannot beat the fierce competition from low-cost producers like Brazil.
After sweeping agricultural reform in the European Union in 2006, even very
technologically advanced production locations such as The Netherlands are
staggering.
Noorderlicht invites photographers to submit work related to the sugar
industry in these four countries. More information on specific topics can be
found on our website.
