"photo l.a. XX - Longest Running Art Fair to showcase Internationally Acclaimed Artists and Photography"
2011-01-13 until 2011-01-16
Santa Monica Civic Auditorium
Los Angeles, CA, USA United States of America

photo l.a, the longest running art fair in Los Angeles history, celebrates its 20th Anniversary January 13 - 16, 2011 at the historic Santa Monica Civic Auditorium. photo l.a. is the largest photo-based art fair in the country and brings together photography dealers from around the globe, displaying the finest masterworks from the 19th century continuing through contemporary video and multi-media installations.

Created by Stephen Cohen, producer of the highly acclaimed artLA art fair and photo NY, and other fairs, photo l.a. will feature many of the world’s leading galleries and private dealers representing international, regional and U.S. artists. Exceptional programming, along with a new art/photography book fair bridging both the photo l.a. and artLA art fairs, promises to create a dynamic experience for a growing patron base that includes over 11,000 collectors, curators and dealers of photography.

Highlights of the 20th Anniversary edition include special installations, a video lounge, lectures & collecting seminars that will illuminate extraordinary works of art and trends in photography. Previous lecturers have included Bruce Davidson, William Eggleston, Eikoh Hosoe, Graciela Iturbide, Diane Keaton, Mona Kuhn, Mary Ellen Mark, Catherine Opie, Martin Parr, Alec Soth and Joel-Peter Witkin.

“For two decades, photo l.a. has played a major role in the cultural life of Los Angeles,” noted Stephen Cohen, producer of photo l.a. and owner of the Stephen Cohen Gallery in Los Angeles. “More than 300 galleries, private dealers and publishers have participated and more than 150 lectures and collecting seminars have been presented. We’ve introduced many significant artists to the public during the fair and have been the catalyst for countless monographs, exhibitions and acquisitions by major institutional and private collections. The 20th anniversary of photo l.a. will continue this meaningful tradition that has impacted the arts and cultural landscape of Los Angeles even more than ever before,” he added.

Additionally, photo l.a. will present Part II of the The La Brea Matrix Project. Part I was exhibited last January at photo l.a. 2010. The La Brea Matrix, a project of Schaden.com, Cologne & The Lapis Press, Culver City, features the results of six photographers in an artists-in-residence program that searched for photographic points of reference to Stephen Shore’s iconic 1975 photograph. The photographers can choose to focus on iconography, semiotics, form, aesthetics and history for the project, which will be realized in an exhibition, portfolio and book publication.
