CUBE, Centre for the Urban Built Environment, is delighted to be showcasing an ambitious commission that forms part of a Manchester wide ‘MERZMEN’ festival showcasing exhibitions and happenings that have been inspired by Kurt Schwitters and the artist’s legacy in modern architecture and contemporary art practice.

Internationally acclaimed architects Office for Subversive Architecture (OSA) have been commissioned by CUBE to create both a gallery based installation and off site project that will dramatically change the interior space of the gallery. This new commission will reflect the complex nature of Schwitters’ Merz architecture, a continuously evolving sculptural spectacle that expands and weaves throughout the gallery complex and out onto the streets.

In its role as a purpose built architecture centre based in the heart of Manchester, CUBE has commissioned an ambitious and thought provoking showcase cutting edge architecture and intervention by one of Europe's most innovative architectural practices. Projects by Office for Subversive Architecture cross the boundaries between art and architecture and are renowned for their Public Realm works and this will be the first time that the practice will have built such a site specific installation in a 'White Cube' gallery space. Their consistent aim has been to develop what they call ‘untraditional approaches’ to reinterpret architecture in the city. Their projects cross the boundaries between art and architecture.

Legendary German artist Kurt Schwitters is famous for creating collages and interventions out of found material from everyday life, and used the term 'Merz' to refer to his works. Whilst these works were usually collages incorporating found objects, such as bus tickets, old wire and fragments of newsprint, Merz also included artist's periodicals, sculptures, sound poems and what would later be called "installations".

In a similar way OSA will be transforming the architecture of CUBE using everyday material collected in Manchester throughout the exhibition period.

This exhibition is kindly supported by the Arts Council of England.

CUBElab: Jason Minsky and William Titley

‘Something in the Pipeline’

Artists Jason Minsky and William Titley investigate the expanded boundaries of Manchester via an unusual journey in the Lake District.

Working mainly off-site to gather historical and contemporary data, their presence in the gallery will be represented by a collection of artefacts including edible models, performative documentation, blogging and digital photography.

As well as regular updates, the archive will be accessible live online as part of the CUBElab residency.
