Thoughts & Feelings for the Creative
There are a lot of romantic notions about what goes on inside the mind of an artist.  One is that pain/anguish somehow leads to deeper art; that an artist must suffer to produce great work.  We can thank poor Van Gogh for this one.  Of course, I wouldn't dare try to speak for everybody but in my experience I can safely say that the "quality" in my work has come despite, not because of, any suffering I have experienced.  Another myth is that art is all about feelings and that thought or structured action is the death of intuition and creativity.  This conversation came up in class the other day.  We concluded that a thought can be passionate, without any emotionality required.  Thoughtful structures can be employed with great passion.  There is a peaceful place in the mind of the creative where ideas are not an emotional struggle; it is a quiet passion born out of discovery and a deep awareness and presence of mind.  Athletes call it the "zone."  It is not based in fear, confusion or "drama."  Structure in this context is not to be confused with being mechanical.  When one releases him/herself into the given structure, which sometimes takes the form of a set of rules or limitations, true freedom is possible.  We humans crave total freedom, like children, but the happiest people know that structure and healthy boundaries are the true keys to freedom.  More on this in today's "Point of Art," below.

Below also are some inspiring books to get the juices flowing. Stop solving problems and putting out fires and become the creative force in your life.  I highly recommend "Path of Least Resistance" because it unlocks the secret to being a successful creative being, in whatever discipline you have chosen.

As far as a basic approach to understanding how the mind plays tricks on us to keep us from our perceptions, "Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain" is the answer.  I use a lot of her techniques in my own teaching.

The "Right" Way vs. The "Easy" Way

My father once said, "there's the right way to do something and there's the easy way." I found this confusing when I was young because this statement can be interpreted a number of ways. At first glance "easy" and "right" are placed at odds with one another. But are they? "Easy" and "right" are not necessarily mutually exclusive. The fact of the matter is the "right" way is almost always the "easy" way. I think my father said this to me in the hope that I would not take short cuts along the way, that I might learn to appreciate hard work.

I have found that those who achieve greatness have learned the secret of how to work economically and effectively. Talent, then, might be defined as the ability to identify a problem, break it down into manageable components and enter the process of resolving each problem, one at a time. In short, great artists have the ability to develop an effective working method.

What my father was really trying to tell me is that we must learn to work "easy" and  "right." It is the difference between wanting something and wanting to want something.  Be honest.  Ask youself, "do I enjoy "struggling as an artist?"  Many of us believe we have to struggle with something for it to be worthwhile, when all we really need is the necessary information presented in a way we can understand and assimilate. This is the key to finding the right way and the easy way.
