FRIDAY, JANUARY 21 Looking Without Labels: The Slippery Slope of Categories Panel Discussion 10–11 AM at TAAS
Free; open to the public
Panelists: Chuck Close, artist; Maria Ann Conelli, executive director, American Folk Art Museum; Tim Hill, owner, Hill Gallery; Beverly Schreiber Jacoby, president, BSJ Fine Art; Leigh Keno, president, Keno Auctions; Dorothy Lichtenstein, president, Roy Lichtenstein Foundation; Alberto Magnan and Dara Metz, co-owners, Magnan Metz
Moderator: Elizabeth E. Jacoby, vice president, BSJ Fine Art
Why does the way we describe an object have such an effect on how we perceive its significance, its collectability, or its value? By questioning traditions—or, more casually, habits of descriptive terminology—can we empower the object to see things with fresh eyes?
The panelists will discuss these questions across various media and styles to help collectors gain a fuller understanding of the way semantics and nuances can dramatically impact the way we appreciate or dismiss works of art.
