"Willi Siber: Sculpture, Wall Object and Painting" opens at Karin Weber Gallery on 18 January and continues to 12 February, 2011. An opening reception will be at 7p.m on Tuesday 18th January, 2011. WILLI SIBER is a sculptor and painter. His artistic work cannot be assigned to a particular genre. It has long transgressed the border between painting and sculpture and approaching a ‘transformation’ of sculpture-picture object that, on the one hand solves the classic problem of sculpture, and on the other paintings discrepancy between figure and base, releasing it from the tradition with an innovative and creative approach. This is the artist’s first exhibition in Hong Kong.
Willi Siber does not consider himself a sculptor or painter, but rather an artist, due to the comprehensive demands he places on himself and his work. In much the same way as his sculptures become 'pictorial space', his surface work has long developed into 'spacial pictures'
The making of the picture becomes an experiment in Willi Siber's two-dimensional work with the goal of creating space for things as well as a 'working space’ for art (Frank Stella) in which creation as well as destruction both play a role. The artist has chosen light colors that refer to the natural origin of his material, that may reflect light or absorb it in their shadowy depth.
The artist studied sculpture under renown German artist Herbert Baumann(1927-90) and has had a long exhibition history in Europe. His works have been shown in many art fairs including ART Cologne, ART Frankfurt and KIAF Seoul.
