Brooklyn Museum Presents Adult Public Programs in February

During February the Brooklyn Museum will present a variety of public programs for adults, including a panel discussion about the special exhibition Tipi: Heritage of the Great Plains, a performance by the Orchestra of St. Luke's, and a new series of engaging adult programs every Thursday at 7 p.m. featuring a conversation with acclaimed poet Ntozake Shange and critic and writer Michaela angela Davis.

PERFORMING ARTS & FILM

Music: Orchestra of St. Luke's
Saturday, February 26, 2 p.m.
St. Luke's presents a program titled "Baroque Reworked," featuring a landmark arrangement of Scarlatti's Concerto No. 9; Bach's Concerto for Oboe and Violin, reclaimed from a long-lost original score; and the premiere of a new work by Phil Kline inspired by a composition from the Late Renaissance master Giovanni Gabrieli. Lecture: "The Tipi as an Architectural Form"
Friday, February 18, 2 p.m.
Dennis Sun Rhodes, a northern Arapaho architect, discusses the tipi and how it has inspired his building projects for Plains tribes.

Panel Discussion: "Tales of the Tipi"
Saturday, February 19, 2 p.m.
In connection with the exhibition Tipi: Heritage of the Great Plains, Nancy Rosoff, Andrew W. Mellon Curator of the Arts of the Americas, moderates a panel made up of the exhibition consultants Gerard Baker (Northern Cheyenne), Teri Greeves (Kiowa), Bently Spang (Mandan Hidatsa), and Daniel Swan (Sam Noble Oklahoma Museum of Natural History).

NEW! Thursday Programs at 7 p.m.

This new weekly series of performances, films, gallery talks, and tours for adults takes place every Thursday at 7 p.m.

As a component of this series, the Museum is partnering with the Nuyorican Poets Cafe and PBS's award-winning independent film showcase POV. The Nuyorican Poets Cafe will present poetry and performance every third Thursday of the month and POV will present Brooklyn-related films every fourth Thursday.

In Conversation: Ntozake Shange and Michaela angela Davis
Acclaimed poet Ntozake Shange, author of the award winning play For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide When the Rainbow is Enuf, joins critic and writer Michaela angela Davis for a conversation about Shange's past and current work. POV Independent Film Off and Running (Nicole Opper, 2010, 76 min.). A coming-of-age film about an African American track star from Brooklyn raised by Jewish lesbians.
