5 Questions
Ameerah Muhammad (right) is a junior at Kenwood Academy, and a ballet, modern, jazz, tap, and hip-hop dancer.

1. What's your favorite piece of public art?
The Bean

2. What is your favorite Halloween costume?
A pimp. It's funny, because I'm a girl.

3. Would you rather be an artist or a millionaire?
A millionaire.

4. What 3 things would you put on a sandwich?
Extra mustard, cheese (American, mozzarella, provolone or munster) and turkey. Always turkey.

5. When are you most creative?
If I'm alone and there's music playing, I like to come up with new choreography, especially if it's a deep song or has deep meaning and the beat or melody are nice.

Stay tuned for next week when we hear from Ameerah's sidekick Isiah Benson, pictured left.
2011 is the year of the artists

The Hyde Park Art Center is declaring 2011 to be the year of the artist. Or more precisely, the year "...With an Artist."

With the goal of increasing the number of people who know, support, and appreciate artists, we're dedicating 2011 to connecting people with artists and their work. We'll spend the year exposing you to how artists create, think, and innovate - right down to how they like their eggs in the morning. Okay, maybe that's too far.

Artists are the drivers and creators of our culture. Throughout the year we will be rolling out initiatives, stories, and events that get you - yes, you - in touch with the artists in your community. Here's what you can look forward to in 2011:

  • Spring Gala Honoring Helyn Goldenberg and Iñigo Manglano-Ovalle on April 16, 2011.
  • Exposing stories of artists exhibiting, teaching, and creating.
  • Discovering the artist in you at events and special programs such as expanded Cocktails and Clay events and Second Sunday programs.

Be sure to stay tuned throughout the year to hear how you can connect with an artist this year!
Get inside Kim Piotrowski's head
Join us for a free artist's talk on Sunday, January 30

Beds and Guns artist Kim Piotrowski candidly discusses her large-format paintings. Join us Sunday, January 30 at 3 p.m. for this informal artist talk.

Piotrowski puts a photojournalistic spin on images of current events. Pulling materials found on the  web, she manipulates images into her painted and drawn abstractions. Piotrowski has been developing her style over the past several years,  with this exhibition showcasing the best of her large-format works.
