ARTIST UPDATE

As we begin 2011 we want to share with all of you some of the recent, current and upcoming news for many of the artists represented by Laurence Miller Gallery.

Jessica Backhaus's prints have recently been acquired by the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston and the Fred and Laura Ruth Bidwell Collection in Akron, Ohio. She will have a one-person show at Robert Morat Galerie in Berlin from February 18 - May 21, as well as at Morat's Hamburg Galerie from May 13 through July. Backhaus was one of ten internationally regarded photographers to be published in ONE DAY by Kehrer Verlag.

Peter Bialobrzeski will have the limited edition book EDEN published this month in Japan by Superlabois, featuring images taken in South Africa. He recently sold works from his Heimat series to DZ Bank in Frankfurt, and several images from his recent series Informal Arrangements will be in a group show soon to open in Berlin.

The tenth of February marks the fortieth anniversary of the shooting down over Laos of  the helicopter carrying LIFE photographer Larry Burrows and fellow photographers Henri Huet, Kent Potter and  Keisaburo Shimamoto. An exhibit of Huet's photographs for the Associated Press opens at the Maison Europeenne de la Photographie, Paris on February 9, 2011, and runs until April 3.  Included in the show are photographs by his friends and colleagues: Larry Burrows, Horst Faas, Eddie Adams, Nick Ut, and David Burnett.

Stephane Couturier's unique series Melting Point was just exhibited at Ursula Blickle Stiftung in Germany, accompanied by the publication Melting Point (Continued) by Fotohof Salzburg. He is on the shortlist for the Third Prix Pictet, the world's leading prize in photography and sustainability. The winner will be announced on March 17. A large touring retrospective of Couturier's work is currently being organized, and hopefully we will have venues to report in our next newsletter.

Fred Herzog continues to enjoy growing international recognition. This past autumn the solo exhibition Fred Herzog: Photographs was held at C/O Berlin, along with an extensive catalogue published by HatjeCantz. In May The Museum of Contemporary Canadian Art (Toronto) will hold an exhibition as will The National Gallery of Canada (Ottawa) in July. In October Douglas & McIntyre will be publishing a 100-page, full-colour monograph on the early colour photography of Fred Herzog with essays by Jeff Wall, Sarah Milroy, and Doug Coupland. A wonderful catalog, FRED HERZOG Locations was recently published by Equinox Gallery in Vancouver.

Helen Levitt continues to be celebrated around the globe. A large exhibition has travelled across Spain as part of PHOTOESPANA, and will next open in Valladolid on February 24 and then in April in Logrono. Group shows include Urban Lyricism at Point du Jour, Cherbourg, France, through January 30; Pictures by Women: A History of Modern Photography, at MOMA, NYC, through April 4; through February 28, she is included in selected works from the Randi and Bob Fisher collection at the magnificent new private museum Pier 24 in San Francisco, created by collector Andy Pilara. And on February 2 the Cantor Arts Center at Stanford University will present In a New York Minute: Photographs by Helen Levitt.

The Nelson-Atkins Museum in Kansas City has just opened The Photographs of RAY K. METZKER, a 92 print exhibition curated by Keith Davis and drawn entirely from their extensive collection of Ray Metzker prints. Keith Davis will speak on Metzker's work at the Museum on Thursday April 7. Our current exhibition, Ray K. Metzker: Intimations, will run through February 26, and is reviewed in this week's The New Yorker.

Michael Spano's work continues to receive much attention, and he is currently in the inaugural exhibition of the Charles P. Sifton Gallery in the Brooklyn Federal Courthouse.

Maggie Taylor's digital work will be on display until January 30 at the Museum of Photographic Arts, San Diego, in New Realities: Jerry Uelsmann + Maggie Taylor.

In much the same way that the European audience responded two decades ago to the distinctly American color work of William Eggleston and Stephen Shore, Bruce Wrighton's color work from the late 1980's is now being embraced across Europe. At Paris Photo our wall of his work attracted many collectors, and his first European one-person show at Galerie les Douches in Paris has just been extended due to popular demand. Contributing to the intense interest in Bruce's work, 23 years after his death, is the recent publication of BRUCE WRIGHTON: AT HOME, a truly beautiful monograph from publisher Roland Angst in Berlin. A limited number of the regular and deluxe editions remain available. Please inquire. A large survey of Bruce's work will be on view at Laurence Miller Gallery from March 3 - April 30.

We will also be participating in the AIPAD Photography Show, March 17th - 20th at the Park Avenue Armory and we look forward to seeing those able to attend. Visitor information may be found on the AIPAD website.
