From simple organic elegance to remarkable mathematical complexity, the diversity of the natural world has always provided a rich source of inspiration for artists and designers. But as our lives become increasingly urbanised, mechanised and digitised, are we losing touch with those aspects of nature which once provoked such awe and wonder? The latest exhibition at the Millennium Gallery, Graphic Nature looks at the surprising ways in which our natural environment continues to influence the most innovative design ideas.
Graphic Nature will bring together the work of a range of contemporary artists and designers who find their greatest inspiration in the environment. Some, like their predecessors at the heart of the Arts and Crafts movement, study nature to create decorative, practical objects; others share a fascination with the underlying complexities of the natural world, from its physical forces to the intricacies of the evolutionary process. A vibrant celebration of nature’s enduring influence, the exhibition will feature the work of leading designers from across Europe, as well as drawing on Museums Sheffield's historic decorative arts and natural history collections.
Graphic Nature will include contemporary metalwork from Katey Felton and Hiroshi Suzuki and ceramics by Peter Beard. The latest in interior design from WertelOberfell Platform and Harry Wells will go on display alongside intricate sculptural creations by Susanna Bonometti and new animal print-inspired textiles by Sarah Haywood. These contemporary designs will be complemented by a series of historical works, including those of celebrated naturalists John Ruskin and William Morris, as well as a number of original specimens from Sheffield’s natural history collection.
