Yoko K.: Open Electronic Music Laboratory, Saturday, January 29th, 6pm

Electronic musician, Yoko K. will present an open laboratory performance of her new work spir at Irvine Contemporary on January 29. The performance combines sensory rewiring listening experiments and direct audience participation.

In her last gallery appearance for accompanying the live painting with Alexa Meade, Yoko K set up an electronic music input device designed for the audience members to play. With her new experimental piece, spir, she will continue to explore the interactive relationship between the performer and the audience. You are cordially invited to attend the live performance and participate in creating the musical environment.

About the artist
Yoko K is an electronic music composer and performer based in Washington, DC. Born in Japan, she began classical piano at the age of 3, and also learned saxophone and clarinet and began vocal training for jazz in high school. After following the music innovations in underground club culture, she began working with electronic composition and digital production, both as a solo performer and with her ensemble, Aphrodizia. Most significantly, she is one of the few contemporary female musicians who not only composes her own music, but has also learned all the software tools to compose, mix, produce, and engineer her own recordings and performances. She recently gave a presentation on the hybrid form of music that she terms "Organic Electronica" at TEDxPotomac (May 2010) (video link). Yoko K has recently finished the compositions for a new album which will soon be released (musician's info).
