QM_photo The Art Deco Society of Los Angeles Presents:
CASINO MODERNE

Los Angeles Athletic Club
431 West Seventh Street - Third Floor
Los Angeles, CA 90014

Saturday, February 5, 2011

By the light of day, you may be a businessmen, banker, housewife, shopgirl or Sunday school teacher, but this is 1920 and the dawn of Prohibition, where by night you are limited only by your imagination. Inspired by the HBO series "Boardwalk Empire," the Art Deco Society of Los Angeles brings a 1920s casino to life on Saturday, February 5, 2011. For one magical night, immerse yourself in living history of the most scandalous kind as you wander, cocktail in hand, through the oldest private club in Los Angeles or settle in at a gaming table that will be legal in the year 2011.

The Los Angeles Athletic Club was founded in 1880, but old Hollywood made it glitter. The evening begins at 7 p.m. and ends at 11:00 p.m. (unless, of course, the cops raid it first!). Purchase a Prohibition-era cocktail as you enjoy complimentary hors d' oeuvres and games of chance.

Members $50 (ADSLA and LAAC). Membership will be verified at Will Call.  If membership cannot be verified at this time, attendee will be responsible for paying the difference between the Member and Non-member price.

Non-members $65

Advance tickets are available via Brown Paper Tickets.

Parking $4.50. Parking structure is adjacent to the Club on Seventh Street. Entrance is to the right of LAAC's awning.

Spend the night in Charlie Chaplin or Rudy Valentino's rooms. The Los Angeles Athletic Club has generously offered Casino Moderne attendees a discounted room in their historic hotel for $134.00. Rate includes American Buffet Breakfast in the third floor Grill Room, in-room WiFi, use of the Athletic Facility and discount overnight parking of $12.00/car. Not included is the city occupancy tax, currently 14%.

Call the L.A. Athletic Club at 1-800-421-8777 to book your room. Don't forget to mention that you are attending the Casino Moderne event.

Cocktails in Historic Places®
Friday, February 11, 2011 - 6pm-8pm
Hop Louie Restaurant (The Golden Pagoda)
950 Mei Ling Way
Los Angeles, CA 90012

Please join the ADSLA for Cocktails in Historic Places® at Hop Louie Restaurant. One of the most popular landmarks in Chinatown, the 5-story Golden Pagoda is the home of Hop Louie, a vintage style, authentic Chinese restaurant, bar and lounge. It originally opened as The Golden Pagoda Restaurant in 1941, and this beautiful building is now a historical landmark. On the south side of Chinatown’s Central Plaza, standing over 50 feet tall, the pagoda is one of the most recognizable places in Chinatown.

Come join us in the bar on the first floor. This reasonably priced bar serves many classic cocktails as well as tropical drinks, amazing Mai Tai’s and Scorpion Bowls. Come early and stay late and enjoy a wonderful meal, because one story above, the building features a classically decorated restaurant, serving classic Chinese food. The Crab Rangoon and Mongolian Beef are two of the best dishes and the portions are large!

We think it's a great place to appreciate the history of Chinatown, good food, and tasty drinks. Come straight from work or slip into something more Deco - or Jake Gittes... Either way, plan to join us! Cocktails in Historic Places® is open to members and non-members alike and reservations are not required. We look forward to seeing you there.

There is metered street parking and an affordable parking structure in the Bamboo Plaza, which is one block north of Hop Louie at 988 N Hill St., Los Angeles, CA 90012 (same structure as the Empress Pavillion)

Miracle Mile Tour

Saturday, March 26th
10:00 am to noon

Join the ADSLA when we take a step back in time - - literally - - on our signature walking tour of L.A.'s iconic Miracle Mile! Born in the 1920s, this brainchild of A.W. Ross was conceived as a street to rival the great boulevards of Europe - - elegant and spacious, populated by stylish shops- - and the chicest people! (And this being Los Angeles, plenty of available parking!) A.W. Ross's dream has developed into one of the countrys most famous urban enclaves - - featuring a treasure trove of Art Deco architecture.

This sidewalk safari is led by J. Eric Lynxwiler, urban archeologist and celebrated co-author and researcher for the book Wilshire Boulevard: Grand Concourse of Los Angeles. If you've never taken a tour with Eric, you're in for a treat - - and if you have, you know that his encyclopedic knowledge of L.A. and its environs is rivaled only by his wit and humor.

The tour begins at the Stiles Clements-designed, black and gold terra cotta bank building at 5209 Wilshire - - come join the ADSLA and explore neighborhood block by block to see what the area was, what it is and what it will be!

Comfortable walking shoes, hat, sunscreen and water suggested. 2-hour metered parking available in the area. Please read signs carefully.

ADSLA Members: $10 per person (membership must be current)
Non-members: $15 per person

Just a reminder that if you are a current ADSLA member you are entitled to a one-time free tour. Number of free tickets is dependent on your membership level. Email us at artdecola@sbcglobal.net to make your reservation -- this is one tour you don't want to miss!

Tickets on sale now. This is a reservation only event. No walk-ins, please.
