'I can't stop...it's just part of my nature'
Don't miss Kim Piotrowski's artist talk and the final day of her exhibition Beds and Guns -- Sunday, January 30 at 3pm.

Kim Piotrowski doesn't shy away from the messy world we live in. She embraces it, confronts it head-on and uses the images from the world in her work. Her exhibition of large-scale paintings, Beds and Guns, is a testament to this.

Piotrowski, who lives in Riverside, IL will be at the Art Center on Sunday, January 30 at 3pm to discuss the techniques and influences that go into her beautiful, thought-provoking abstract works. (And if you haven't seen the exhibition yet, be sure to attend, as it closes on the same day!)

For a look at Piotrowski's art studio, methods and inspirations, check out this video by Chicago Arts. Want more? Visit her website.

Don't miss 848 this Monday
Hyde Park Art Center Artist-in-Residence on the radio

All you hard core WBEZ fans out there may already have heard about the public radio station's new series Dear Chicago. But for those of you who haven't, Dear Chicago focuses on giving the public an opportunity to speak in their own words about the issues concerning them, and they feel should concern Chicago's next mayor.

The Art Center's own artist-in-residence, Conrad Freiburg, is one of only fifteen people selected to speak on air. He'll talk candidly from an artist's perspective about the issues facing today's Chicago.

You can catch Conrad on WBEZ's morning program Eight-Forty-Eight at 9am Monday, January 31. Or visit the Dear Chicago to hear Conrad's and other stories.
Stephen Lapthisophon: The Construction of a National Identity
New exhibition explores the utter usefulness of our hands.

Stephen Lapthisophon returns to the city of his education (School of the Art Institute of Chicago MFA, 1979) to present a musing on the issues of place, identity and history through the use of our hands. The Construction of a National Identity opens Sunday, January 30, and runs through May 22 in Gallery 5.

The exhibition is a text- and sound-based showing riffing on the recipe for paella. An eclectic Latin dish, paella's central ingredient is rice, the grain Lapthisophon considers to be a symbol of cultural hybridity due to it's varied uses in almost every culture. In an attempt to track how we make our mark in the world through our food preparation, Lapthisophon has created a wall drawing made with perishable materials such as rice flour and saffron ink, as well as found objects, audio and photography.

Lapthisophon, currently teaches at the University of Texas in Arlington and is sponsored by Conduit Gallery in Dallas, TX. Learn more about the artist here, here and here.
