THE
RED CHAPEL-$8.00-http://www.theredchapel.com
“A
journalist with no scruples, a spastic, and a comedian travels
to North Korea
with a mission - to challenge the conditions of the smile in one
of the world’s
most notorious regimes.
On
the pretext of being a small theatre troupe on a cultural
exchange visit from
Denmark, 'The Red Chapel' was given permission to travel to
North Korea with
the objective of performing at special events for selected
audiences. But in
reality the small troupe was compromised of a group who had no
such intentions.
Two group members, Jacob and Simon, were both adopted form North
Korea to
Europe as infants and this is their story about the
confrontation with their
biological roots, and their attempt to act and perform in a
world where humor
and humanity have very poor conditions.
…
In short, The Red Chapel chronicles the amusing and often
bizarre encounters
between this Danish “theatre troupe” and their North Korean
hosts in a one of a
kind, East-meets-West-meets-East look at cultural exchange in
the modern
world's last anti-globalist bastion.” English and subtitled in
English for
Danish and Korean language.
METROPOLIS (THE COMPLETE
RESTORATION)-$8.00
Kino
International presents The Complete
Metropolis, the most comprehensive restoration of Fritz
Lang's classic with
an additional 25 minutes of lost footage and the original
Gottfried Huppertz
score. In July 2008, it was announced that an essentially
complete copy of
Metropolis had been found — a 16mm dupe negative unearthed by
the curator of
the Buenos Aires Museo del Cine that was considerably longer
than any existing
print. It included not merely a few additional snippets, but 25
minutes of
“lost” footage, about a fifth of the film, that had not been
seen since its
Berlin debut. The discovery of such a significant amount of
material called for
yet another restoration, spearheaded again by the Murnau
Foundation and
coordinated by their Film Restorer Anke Wilkening. Also
returning was Martin
Koeber, Film Department Curator of the Deutsche Kinemathek, who
had supervised
the 2001 restoration.
Metropolis takes place in
2026, when the
populace is divided between workers who must live in the dark
underground and
the rich who enjoy a futuristic city of splendor. The tense
balance of these
two societies is realized through images that are among the most
famous of the
20th century, many of which presage such sci-fi landmarks as 2001: A Space Odyssey and Blade
Runner. Lavish and spectacular,
with elaborate sets and modern science fiction style, Metropolis stands today as the crowning
achievement of the German
silent cinema.

7:00 and 9:30-$10.00 (DVD Release Party! Giveaways and Raffle
Prizes!)
THE SECRET TO
A HAPPY ENDING
documents the Drive-By Truckers and their congregation of fans
as they explore
tales of human weakness and redemption. Filmmaker Barr Weissman
followed
the band during three critical years of touring and recording —
years in which
the band struggles to overcome the trauma of divorce and
survives a near
breakup. The film features band interviews, behind-the-scenes
footage on
the road and in the studio, and legendary live performances.
Reflective of the
band’s roots in Alabama and Georgia, the film explores the
changing American
South — its culture, economy and history.
Running time
101 minutes
WASTELAND
UTOPIAS-Wednesday Feb 16-2 shows 7:00pm and
9:00pm-$10.00-Filmmaker David Sherman in attendance
Wasteland
Utopias deals with
the social and environmental consequences of the urbanization of
Arizona’s
Sonora Desert. His double-projection piece, built from doc
interviews, found
footage, and narrative tableaux, explores the
magic-conceptualist intersection
of two radically different utopian thinkers: mega-developer Del
Webb and
outsider psychiatrist/scientist Wilhelm Reich. Both operated in
Southern
Arizona in the late ‘50s—Webb building Sun City, his colossal
panoptic
planned-retirement community, while Reich conducted
weather-modification
experiments with Orgone Energy. ALSO: Dr. Eva Reich on her
father’s UFO
obsession, plus vintage Sun City propaganda!
Running time
91 minutes

TODD
P GOES TO AUSTIN-Friday Feb 18 and Saturday Feb
19, 11:00 pm-$8.00
As record
labels die,
independents thrive. In the wake of Napster, MySpace and
Facebook there is a
generation of artists creating and performing music on their own
terms. With
the help of legendary DIY rock promoter Todd Patrick, Brooklyn
has become
ground zero for these exciting young musicians.
Using
never-before-seen
footage, including material shot by the bands themselves, TODD P
GOES TO AUSTIN
exposes what life is like surviving and touring at the
underground level.
Interviews with Todd about the necessity of independent music
and creativity
connect the bands as they tour down to Austin, TX to appear in
the DIY music
scene’s answer to the SXSW Music Festival.
Featuring
unforgettable live
performances from Matt and Kim, Dan Deacon, Mika Miko, The

more.
