« I am your biggest fan » est une sélection de courts métrages d’artistes américains provenant du Texas, de New York, de la Louisiane et de la Californie, commissariée par l’artiste Julie Lequin.
Les oeuvres choisies racontent des histoires fascinantes d’une manière à la fois complexe, sexy et pleine de finesse. Les vidéos, réalisées entre 1991 et maintenant, sont influencées par la culture populaire, l’art performatif et l’art du conteur. Certaines de ces vidéos sont plus musicales (Anne McGuire, Catherine Ross), tandis que d’autres sont inspirées par des jeux de rôles (Lucas Michael, Nina Schwanse, Harry Dodge & Stanya Kahn) ou encore, par des fantasmes secrets (Jennifer Sullivan, Kelly Sears).
C’est lorsque Julie vivait en Californie qu’elle a été initiée au travail de ces artistes à l’école, ainsi que lors de fêtes et de projections. Elle s’est liée d’amitié avec eux parfois rapidement, mais d’autres fois, trop intimidée pour leur parler, elle se contentait de les espionner à la bibliothèque de l’école ou de suivre leurs activités via Internet. Cette projection est le prétexte dont Julie avait besoin pour entrer finalement en contact avec tous ces artistes. Julie est emballée à l’idée de présenter ces pièces inspirantes et touchantes à Montréal, dans le cadre de cette projection d’un soir.
Julie Lequin (née à Laval en 1979) a obtenu un baccalauréat en arts (BFA) de l’Université Concordia en 2001 et une maîtrise en arts (MFA) du Art Center College of Design (Pasadena, CA) en 2005. Le premier livre de cette artiste multidisciplinaire a été publié en 2007 par 2nd Cannons Publications (Los Angeles). En 2009-10, Julie a exposé à White Columns et Liu Gallery (New York, NY), Santa Barbara Contemporary Arts Forum (Santa Barbara, CA), ainsi qu’à La Centrale (Montréal). Julie a été récipiendaire d’une bourse du California Community Foundation et a fait des résidences d’artiste à Yaddo (NY), Art Omi (NY), Macdowell Colony (NH) ainsi qu’aux Récollets (Paris, France). “I Am Your Biggest Fan” is a compilation of short length videos by American artists from Texas, New York, Louisiana and California, curated by artist Julie Lequin.
The selected works tell compelling narratives in an intricate, sexy and clever way. The videos made between 1991 and now are influenced from pop culture, performance art and storytelling. While some videos are more musical (Anne McGuire, Catherine Ross), others are derived from character playing (Lucas Michael, Nina Schwanse, Harry Dodge & Stanya Kahn), or from secret fantasies (Jennifer Sullivan, Kelly Sears).
While living in California, Julie was introduced to the work of these artists at school, houseparties and at screenings. Sometimes she became friends with them right away, but other times she would spy on them at the school library or keep an eye on them via internet, being too intimidated to talk to them. This screening was Julie’s excuse to finally get in touch with all of them. She is thrilled to be showing these inspiring and moving pieces in Montreal, for this one evening screening at La Centrale.
Julie Lequin (born in Laval, Québec in 1979) is a French Canadian artist. She received a BFA from Concordia University in 2001 and an MFA from Art Center College of Design (Pasadena, CA) in 2005. This multidisciplinary artist’s first book was published in 2007 by 2nd Cannons Publications (Los Angeles). In 2009-10, she exhibited at the Santa Barbara Contemporary Arts Forum (CA), La Centrale (Montréal), White Columns and Horton & Liu Gallery (NY). Julie was awarded a fellowship from the California Community Foundation and has done residencies at Yaddo (NY), Art Omi (NY), Macdowell Colony (NH) and Les Récollets (Paris, France).
