mobius news update

a round-up of recent news from

mobius & mobius artist group members

Milan Kohout's Autobiography Published

"Proved' vola svetem, volem zustane" has topped the Czech book lists, voted #1 by booksellers, publishers and the Czech Republic's largest book distribution company Kosmas, even prompting a book tour!

Milan Kohout Book

"Proved' vola svetem, volem zustane"

is an autobiographic novel by long time Mobius Artist Group member Milan Kohout. It addresses both Milan's experience living under the communistic totalitarian system in Czechoslovakia and his life under totalitarian capitalism here in the USA.

The book covers the period of Milan's participation in the Czechoslovakian underground movement called "Second Culture". It ends with his interrogation, jail detentions and finally expulsion from the country by the government secret services and two years in an Austrian refugee camp.

We also learn about his culture shock experiencing "free market run" capitalism in the USA and his slowly acquired realization that this system is as oppressive as his life under totalitarian communism.

The book also incorporates descriptions of Milan's Performance Art pieces, his poems and many documentary photographs he took on his journey through this two seemingly "different " political systems.

Cambridge Arts Council Grant goes to MAG Member project

Spin a Yarn, Weave a Life

A Textual Fiber History of Cambridge Elders

Catherine Tutter (MAG) and Cheyenne McCarter

Figuratively captured by the English colloquialism spinning a yarn, the universal act of storytelling is linked to the ubiquity of cloth in everyday life through the primacy of language, birthing the words textile and text from the same Latin root meaning to weave.  Spin a Yarn, Weave a Life is a project embracing the rich associations between storytelling and fiber arts, centered on the lives of low-income elders residing at JFK Apartments, a Cambridge Housing Authority building. Catherine Tutter and Cheyenne McCarter have professional interests converging at the intersection of arts and healthcare - a diverse, multidisciplinary field connecting people with the power of the arts at key moments in their lives. The project counters prevailing social attitudes towards aging and empowers elders to reclaim the uniqueness of their life stories.

Spin a Yarn, Weave a Life has been awarded a $2,000 grant through the

Cambridge Arts Council

under the project category Education and Access.  Conceived as a year-long project, a small group of 4-6 elders will participate in the physical transformation of their stories into the language of woven textile through an ancient Japanese fiber process called shifu (literally, woven paper).  The project engages elders in the familiar surroundings of their own homes in progressive stages of relationship-building, recording narratives, spinning yarns, and weaving stories.  At the conclusion of the project, each elder's individual experience is brought into a collective setting with a concluding ceremony bringing all participants together, where they are presented with their own individual woven fiber pieces.  The project leaders will also fabricate hand-bound books containing a chapter on each elder featuring selections of photographs and excerpted story texts, to be given as gifts with the story weavings.

About Mobius:
Mobius (est. 1977) is a non-profit, artist-run organization, whose mission is to generate, shape and test experimental art. The members of the organization believe an effective strategy for supporting this art is to establish grounds that build relationships among fellow artists.  Mobius is committed to structuring environments that foster projects incorporating a wide range of disciplines.  This approach sets in motion situations where the artist's impact can be seen locally, nationally and internationally.  Constructing art initiatives outside accepted frameworks and encouraging animated discourse with the public are fundamental to Mobius.
