Bartley + Company Art is proud to present Seung Yul Oh’s first commercial, and third solo, exhibition in Wellington. This exhibition follows his two highly successful public gallery shows- at the NewDowse last summer and in the sculpture court at the Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa in 2009.

The exhibition is titled oi0iOi0io. With this title, which brings together the forms of letters and number to defy a literal reading or expression, the artist is drawing our attention to the way he would like his art to be perceived and encouraging viewers to experience the art physically as much as visually or intellectually.

Working across painting, sculpture and video, Seung Yul Oh is renowned for a playful aesthetic, which marries eastern and western sensibilities and combines pop culture and toy, or animal, like forms with high-art formalism.

In this exhibition he presents two new paintings and two new sculptural works. For the first time his distinctive oval egg forms are combined to create a new hybrid form - a kind of grown-up interpretation of the child’s balancing toy – that plays and teases with issues of form, scale, movement and stability. The flawless high-gloss fibreglass surfaces seduce and command engagement. The two small paintings are a quiet counterpoint opening up further layers of possibility. As artist, Oh is composer and conductor creating installational compositions, which speak directly to the nature of both his materials and subjects and the concept of chance.

Oh has been exhibiting regularly for eight years. His work first came to national attention when he won the 2004 Waikato Art Award, before completing his Master of Fine Arts at Auckland University in 2005. At the end of 2010 he won the sought-after Harriet Friedlander Residency, which sends an artist to New York with $80,000 for as long as it lasts. Korean born, Oh is spending 2011 in Korea and New York.

If you are in Wellington over the next week, check out Vista at the Academy of Fine Arts

With best wishes
Alison Bartley
