February 10 - KING KONGDir. Shoedsack/Cooper (USA, 1933) 100 min.Adventurer Carl Denham is leading a "crazy voyage" to a mysterious, uncharted island to photograph "something monstrous ... neither beast nor man." King Kong teems with memorable moments: a fantastic isle filled with dinosaurs and other creatures; the giant simian's lovestruck obsession with the blonde starlet, Kong's capture; his Manhattan rampage; and the fateful finale atop the Empire State Building. February 24 - THE BIRDSDir. Hitchcock (USA, 1963) 120 min.The Birds follows a chic blonde, Melanie Daniels as she travels to a coastal town to hook up with a rugged fellow she's only just met. The Birds is one of Hitchcock's most psychologically tense studies of violence, loneliness and anxiety. March 3 - THE INCREDIBLE MR. LIMPET Dir. Lubin (USA, 1964) 99 min.During World War II, Mr Limpet is a mild-mannered, spectacle-sporting bookkeeper who proves himself the war hero he always knew he was meant to be. Starring the irrepressible Don Knotts, this feature combines live action and animated sequences with delightful results. March 10 - THE FLY Dir. Neumann (USA, 1958) 94 min.This is the original version of a scientist experimenting with matter transference accidentally exchanging one arm and his head with that of a fly which was in the transfer chamber.
March 24 - THE BEAR Dir. Annaud (France, 1989) 92 min.Annaud gets his ursine stars to do what he wants. The story deals with a young cub who, after his mother is killed in a landslide, bonds to a lumbering male Kodiak. The two of them then must cope with an invasion of hunters into their territory. March 31 - THE BLACK STALLION Dir. Ballard (USA, 1979) 118 min.A visual feast from start to finish, the timeless tale of The Black Stallion plays out on almost mythic terms. A young boy survives a shipwreck and is stranded on a deserted island with a graceful black stallion, with whom the boy develops a friendship. After being rescued the two make a winning team as jockey and lightning-fast racehorse. April 7 - MICROCOSMOS Dir. Nuridsany/Perrenou (France, 1996) 80 min.Using revolutionary cameras, the directors have made an amazing chronicle of the insect world. Microcosmos captures the fun and adventure of a spectacular hidden universe revealed in a breathtaking, close-up view unlike anything you've ever seen. April 14 - MARCH OF THE PENGUINS Dir. Jacquet (France, 2005) 80 min.In the Antarctic, every March the quest begins to find the perfect mate and start a family. This courtship will begin with a long journey - a journey of hundreds of miles across the continent, in freezing cold temperatures, in brittle, icy winds and through deep, treacherous waters. April 21 - THE COVE Dir. Psihoyos (USA/Japan, 2009) 92 min.National Geographic photographer Louie Psihoyos sets about to uncover a shocking (but regular) ritual on the Japanese coast: the herding and slaughter of thousands of bottlenose dolphins in the town of Taiji. April 28 - AMORES PERROS Dir. Innaritu (Mexico, 2000) 154 min. (Rated R)Amores Perros is a uniquely conceptual portrait of people whom we come to know through their relationship with dogs. The film is simultaneously bleak, cynical, insightful, and compassionate, with layers of meaning that are sure to reward multiple viewings. May 5 - TALK TO HER (HABLE CON ELLA) Dir. Almodovar (Spain, 2002) 152 min. (Rated R)Pedro Almodovar's masterful direction creates an intricate and compelling film with a lively and entertaining story filled with wit and humor. The characters possess compelling quirks and are wonderfully realized in a stunning cast. |
