Legendary cellist Frances-Marie Uitti pioneered a revolutionary technique: playing with two bows at once. On Saturday, she'll perform works written especially for her by Giacinto Scelsi, Annie Gosfield, György Kurtág, Lisa Bielawa (World Premiere) and others. NewBorn Trio (Katie Down, Jeffery Lependorf, & Miguel Frasconi), formed for Kosovo's day of independence, performs with a collection of glass, string, and wood objects; the same night, Michael Sperone performs with a single large cymbal, in a piece called Harmonic Symbols

NewBorn Trio
+ Michael Sperone

NewBorn Trio (Katie Down, Jeffrey Lependorf, and Miguel Frasconi) formed specifically to perform in Kosovo on the national day of independence, NewBorn Day. This unique ensemble combines handmade and found glass instruments, traditional Asian flutes, plucked strings, and odd sound-making objects to evoke unimaginable musical textures.

Michael Sperone’s Harmonic Symbols is a series of pieces written for large cymbal and computer. The computer “listens” to the cymbal and replays the notes it hears, recreating a version of the cymbal filtered through the computer’s “senses.”

Frances-Marie Uitti

Cellist and composer Frances-Marie Uitti (US/NL) pioneered a revolutionary cello technique. Using two bows in one hand, she plays four-part sustained chordal passages and is able to execute intricate polyphony. One of the most exciting musicians working in the vibrant Netherlands new music scene, many composers have written for and dedicated works to her: Kurtag, Nono, Scelsi, and Andriessen among others.

György Kurtág, Luigi Nono, Giacinto Scelsi, Louis Andriessen, Jonathan Harvey, Richard Barrett, Sylvano Bussoti are among those who have used this technique in their works dedicated to her. Collaborating significantly over years with radicals, Dick Raaijmakers, John Cage and Giacinto Scelsi, she has also worked closely with Iannis Xenakis, Elliott Carter, Brian Ferneyhough and countless composers from the new generation.

This program is supported, in part, by funds from the Netherlands Cultural Services.

Share: free audio & video jam

Sunday nights at ISSUE are host to a come-one-come-all group of musicians and video artists, collaborating in a jam called SHARE. Those who work with audio need only to bring an instrument or other sound-producing device and an XLR, RCA, or 1/4" cable (if amplified). The video jam is a multi-user live synthesis, in which participants are able to jointly compose the visual output. Bring your laptop/camera/Amiga and VGA, S-Video, or RCA cables.

Soundscreen Design Presents:
Seriously Ecstatic: Joshua White at the Fillmore East, 1968–1970

Seriously Ecstatic: Joshua White at the Fillmore East, 1968-70 is an account of the Joshua Light Show’s legendary two years at Bill Graham’s Fillmore East. Performing with The Doors, Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix, Blue Cheer, The Band, and many others, the Joshua Light Show created extravagant visual experiences to accompany the music. The book includes exclusive photos and film stills from those performances, along with pleasant detours to the set of Midnight Cowboy and the Woodstock festival. Dan Nadel has interviewed Joshua White and scoured his archives to compile this mini-history.

Soundscreen Design, a “product company inspired by music” and publisher of the Artist Music Journals series hosts a party celebrating the book’s release.  The evening will include music by “Gary, Devin, and Ross,” the musical collaboration between Gary PanterDevin Flynn, and Ross Goldstein.  Joshua White and his team will enliven ISSUE’s performance space with a multi-channel video environment, incorporating never-before-seen archival footage.
