Snow Sculptors to Create Dragon Slide at Woodson Art Museum

Wausau, Wisconsin: Snow sculptors begin carving a giant dragon slide on Wednesday, February 9, continuing the twenty-two-year snow sculpture tradition at the Woodson Art Museum. The twenty-foot slide will feature a fire-breathing dragon carved in relief along one side and stairs that will take visitors to the top for slippery rides down the slide.

Team USA snow sculptors Mike Martino, Tom Queoff, and Mike Sponholtz work their winter magic, February 9-12. Preparatory work for this year's ambitious project begins days before Team USA arrives on Wednesday. Snow must be hauled to the site, forms built, and snow tamped firmly into the forms.

Visitors are welcome to watch the snow sculptors in action in the south end of the sculpture garden and then return for the snow slide opening event, Saturday, February 12, Noon- 1 pm, for hot cider, cookies, and an opportunity to meet the sculptors and take a ride on the dragon slide.
As long as weather permits, the large slide will remain in the sculpture garden where children and families can have fun in the snow.

The slide outside is designed to complement chairs featured inside the Museum, where new exhibitions showcase iconic furniture designs of the 1950s and 60s along with a contemporary twist. "Good Design: Stories from Herman Miller," "It's Herman Miller Time: Today's Furniture Makers Respond," and "Google Doodles: Design for the Modern Office" remain on view through April 3, 2011. Support for this year's snow sculpture project is being provided by Grand Lodge By Stoney Creek, the City of Wausau Public Works, and Advanced Concrete Foundations.

Snow Sculpture
Team USA's 2011 snow sculpture will be a large slide with a dragon carved on the side. Because the slide requires the building of a structure to support the snow, the team will begin its work on Wednesday, February 9. Weather permitting, children and the young at heart can expect to take a spin down the slide on Saturday, February 12. The Museum's annual snow sculptures take on a stunning glow when lit after dark.
