Performing Arts Bulawayo [PAB] and the Academy [Bulawayo]

Petroc Trelawny talks about the Proms (8 February)
Tuesday 8 February in the Robert Sibson Hall at 7.30 p.m.
After his appearances at last year's Bulawayo Music Festival, Petroc Trelawny is well known in Bulawayo.  He is one of the regular announcers on BBC Radio 3 and has introduced dozens of Proms in recent years.  His talk will cover his own experiences and some of the history of the Proms as well as excepts from particularly memorable occasions on DVD.
Admission: $3.00

The Way We Live Now (10, 17 & 24 February)
Thursdays 10, 17 & 24 February in the Robert Sibson Hall at 7.30 p.m.
This award-winning serial tells the story of a society in turmoil, where money, power and corruption are the order of the day. Set in the railway boom of the 1870s, it contains all the elements that made Trollope the most popular novelist of the day, the trials and tribulations of young love, the enduring values of honourable men.
Augustus Melmotte (David Suchet) arrives in London with his wife and daughter. he appears charming and as noble as ever, but a deceitful financier lies beneath the surface. Wasting no time in frivolous activities, he charms an unwitting Paul Montague into investing in one of his schemes. But as Melmotte climbs the society ladder, his web of deceit captures his own daughter Marie and her suitor Felix Carbury, son of the feckless novelist Lady Carbury.  "...pacy and funny and beautifully acted."  The Times.
Admission: $3.00 [$6.00 the series]

Offenbach: The Tales of Hoffmann (18 February)
Robert Sibson Hall at 6.30 p.m. – with supper interval.
Offenbach's last and most ambitious opera links three stories with a similar theme, Hoffmann's unfulfilled love for, in turn, Olympia, who proves to be a mechanical doll, the consumptive Antonia, and.Giulietta, a Venetian courtesan, whilst a fourth tale, introducing another love, Stella, provides a framework for the opera.  In each case Hoffmann's search for the ideal woman is thwarted by a diabolical character, Dr.Coppélius (a much less cosy character than in the Delibes ballet!), Dr.Miracle, the magician Dappertutto and Lindorff, and, in this striking production from the Paris Opera, all four villains are played by Bryn Terfel.
Admission: $3.00   [free to Red Carpet members]

Fallen Women and Virtuous Wives (28 February)
Monday 28 February in the Robert Sibson Hall at 7.30 p.m.
Petroc Trelawny, Graham Johnson and Ron Sandler are arranging a concert in London to launch the British Friends of the Zimbabwe Academy of Music.  The main aim is to set up a trust fund for the Academy to help it expand and employ new teachers, but it will also support the 2012 and perhaps future festivals.
The Academy is arranging several events during the week to launch its own find-raising effort and to coincide with the London Concert itself, will be showing a recording of a recital Dame Felicity Lott and Graham Johnson gave in 2009 to celebrate the 30th anniversary of their first appearance together.  As the title suggests, the programme aims to entertain with music ranging from Haydn and Mozart to Kurt Weill and William Walton, from Schumann and Brahms to Noël Coward and Oscar Straus.  There will also be a film called "My Own Country" which gives a fascinating glimpse into the richness of the song and poetry of the idyllic Sussex countryside where Felicity Lott has lived for many years.
Admission: $3.00

Association of Complementary Health Practitioners (8 February)
Our talk and supper for February will be held on Tuesday, 8 February at 6.30 pm for 7 pm,  at Highlands Sports Club.
Our speaker will be Marietta van der Werff, who is a trainer  and teacher of the wonderful course on healing and self help, called "THE JOURNEY". It is described briefly in the short write up below. There is little doubt that most people who hear this talk will be encouraged to learn more about it,  with the hope that it will help them and their friends and families to find a better way to improved health and well-being. Marieta will be able to demonstrate with an introductory video in which Brandon Bays explains the work, and what it has meant to her personally as well as many thousands of others.
The talk will be followed by a "Bring and Share" supper, which everyone who attends is asked to contribute to, just a plate of something tasty, buffet style,or a pudding which is always popular. The bar will be open. Everyone is welcome, and new members are invited to join us. There is a small donation requested at the door to cover the cost of hiring the hall and to offer a gratuity to the kitchen staff.

Work on yourself and others with The Journey (TM).
Journeywork originates from the personal experience of Brandon Bays. She was able to cure a football size tumor grown in her womb in less than six weeks. This experience led her to develop a method to access, release and heal old issues stored as cellular memory. The Journey has helped thousands of people worldwide free themselves from issues like fear, anxiety, stress, depression, low self-esteem, chronic anger, rage, physical illnesses and disease. It also has been used to deal with personal issues relating to addictions and unhealthy behaviours such as, sexual abuse, relationship problems and problematic career performance. <http://www.thejourney.com>
