"I'm
not afraid to big up my community,
because
the media fails to notice our unity,
or
because I've been made a victim to scrutiny
or because I'm underrated
this isn't new to me".

RISE AND SHINE:
A COMMUNITY-BASED TALENT SHOWCASE
Tuesday February 8, 2011, Doors at 6:30 pm
The
Underground, Student Centre, York University
Too cold to chill outside? Jane and Finch will be bringing
the heat to York University with RISE AND SHINE. Organized by Lola
Lawson as part of her internship at the Art Gallery of York University,
RISE AND SHINE is a community-based talent showcase featuring stellar
performances by emerging artists from the Jane and Finch community. Presented
in conjunction with the Art Gallery of York University’s winter program, this
hype event will include performances by some of the community's best, up and
coming MC's, singers, and spoken word artists. Shining the spotlight on
underexposed artists, this event will connect emerging talents with new
audiences and provide exposure and recognition that is long overdue. Hosted by Femi Lawson the event features music by
DJ OHSO and performances by: David Delisca, Domanique Grant, Rian
Hamilton, Heavy Steve, Nancy Kamalanathan, Lola Lawson, Nomanzland, R.O.S.,
Rushie Raw, Star Dat Prince, and TK.
Not satisfied with a one-off event, Lawson established the
first Jane and Finch club at York University in order to ensure that the
talents and strengths of the community remain in the spotlight. This club will
also contribute to York University's ongoing efforts to bridge the gap and
overcome the divide that has historically separated the university from the
surrounding community.
RISE AND SHINE: A Community-Based Talent Showcase was made
possible thanks to generous support from the York United Black Student
Alliance, the Creative Arts Student Association, and Jane and Finch at York.
