FIGMENT 2011: NYC, Boston & Jackson, MS

Calls for Participation now open!

FIGMENT, a free, family-friendly participatory arts event held in multiple cities and attracting tens of thousands of participants each year, is seeking artists and volunteers for its 2011 events in New York City, Boston, and Jackson, Mississippi.

Founded in 2007 on New York City's Governors Island with a handful of projects and a few thousand enthusiasts, FIGMENT has grown exponentially into a multi-day, multi-city event that drew over 30,000 participants in NYC and Boston in 2010. With the addition of Jackson, Mississippi in 2011, FIGMENT continues its mission to offer free, inclusive and participatory art to entire communities, removing the barriers of museum and gallery walls and entrance fees and blurring the lines between those who create and those who enjoy art.

FIGMENT 2011 Events:

Jackson, Mississippi, May 14-15 (4/15 submission deadline)
Boston, Massachusetts, June 4-5 (4/15 submission deadline)
New York, New York, June 10-12 (5/1 submission deadline).

ARTISTS!

FIGMENT welcomes works in every imaginable medium including sculpture, installation, performance, music, workshops, games, experiences, site-specific pieces, social experiments, and any combination thereof. Projects that involve audience participation and interactivity are particularly encouraged:

Submit a project for FIGMENT Boston (deadline 4/15)
Submit a project for FIGMENT NYC (deadline 5/1)

VOLUNTEERS!

FIGMENT is an entirely volunteer-run effort and is always seeking energetic individuals to assist with curatorial, communications, and logistical needs in all three cities:

Volunteer for FIGMENT Jackson
Volunteer for FIGMENT Boston
Volunteer for FIGMENT NYC

CURATORS! (NYC)

New in 2011 for FIGMENT NYC... Curators can submit proposals to curate an area of the island, a stage, or even an indoor space for the duration of the FIGMENT NYC event:

Be a FIGMENT NYC Area Curator (deadline 3/1)

MINIGOLF! (NYC)

In addition, FIGMENT Minigolf Course, a summer-long exhibition, is seeking proposals for individual hole designs, on the theme of "Bugs and Features":

Design and Build a Minigolf Hole
(registration deadline 2/15; submission deadline 3/1)

DONATE!

FIGMENT is exclusively supported by donations and grants. Please consider making a contribution to support FIGMENT and its mission to encourage widespread participation and expression by creating free large-scale collaborative arts experiences for everyone.

Support FIGMENT. Make art happen.

The Institute for Infinitely Small Things conducts creative, participatory research that aims to temporarily transform public spaces dominated by corporate and political agendas. Using performance and conversation, we investigate social and political "tiny things". These have included corporate ads, street names, and post-9/11 security terminology. The Institute markets dissent through its research reports in the form of maps, books and videos. This interdisciplinary group has a varied and open membership.
