– In 2011 the Kenosha Public Museums mark an incredible milestone:
the 75th
anniversary of a community jewel. The museum got its start in the old
post office building at 5608 10th
Ave., which now houses the Dinosaur Discovery Museum. Today, the
museum campus also includes the Civil War Museum, which opened in
2008 at 5400 First Ave., next to the Kenosha Public Museum's
lakefront location.
Several
events are planned this year to commemorate the anniversary,
beginning with afternoon family activities and an evening reception
on Saturday, Feb. 19. Have a blast a with free family activities,
including a chance to make paper rockets, noisemakers and party hats.
Visitors will be able to enjoy displays by the Wisconsin Organization
of Spacemodeling Hobbyists, sign a giant wall card and create a
museum memory for a digital slide show.. Hot chocolate and cookies
will be served from 3-5 p.m., and a fireworks display will take place
at 4 p.m. outside the museum.
The
party continues after hours with “Hot Jazz on a Cold Night,” from
6:30-9:30 p.m. The Mike Smith Jazz Quartet from Andy's Jazz Club in
Chicago will perform. Appetizers and beverages from Kenosha' finest
chefs will be provided. A fireworks display will take place at 7 p.m.
Cost
of the reception is $40 or $30 for Friends of the Museums. Advance
registration is required.
The
anniversary celebration will continue throughout the year with other
events, including a museums crawl via streetcar on Friday, July 15
and 75 hours of museum programming Aug. 19-22 at the Kenosha Public
Museum.
