Somebody Arted In Here, Odd Future, Win Win, Lindstrom, Discovery: Llyodski & Benguin, Supertouch, Bag Raiders, The Godfathers and more!

Somebodyartedinhere_color

While many people associate Santos Party House with late-night dancing, the best live concerts, an awe-inspiring sound system, and NYC people like rock musician, Andrew W.K., artist, Spencer Sweeney, and Hip Hop Legend Just Blaze, the venue quests for creative domination in more ways than only music, the most recent of which is turning the venue into a canvas for some of the most forward-thinking luminaries in the visual arts. "Somebody Arted In Here!" is an ongoing rotation of diverse art installations.

Each visual event is accompanied by a late-night rager - a party complimenting the theme of each unique art piece in a special way. On Saturday, February 26, the first event in the series showcases the world-renowned figurative impressionist, Peter Doig, who will take over the Santos South Pole (downstairs), while Lizzi Bougatsos of Gang Gang Dance and Rita Ackermann, take over the massive store front windows of our historic 96 Lafayette street building, with their own custom installation pieces. The opening will feature DJs Brian Mcgraw (Gang Gang Dance), Spencer Sweeney, Thomas Bullock (A.R.E. Weapons), and Peter Doig himself. Prepare to get arted upon.

Scandinavian pop music is big on icy synths and catchy melodies, so for a Norwegian to rise through the ranks to worldwide prominence in the world of electro-disco he must really have his chops in order. Hans-Peter Lindstrøm is one such producer, whose music employs a deft sense of rhythm and texture from his remixes, to his collaborations, to his immensely successful solo compositions. His most recent outing, a collaboration with singer Christabelle, was called "simply stellar" by XLR8R and has received similar accolades from Prefix, Pitchfork and Urb. Perhaps his most famous effort was Where You Go I Go Too, consisting of three long and elaborate tracks ranging from 15 to 40 minutes in length. It won the Norwegian Spellemannprisen for "best electronica album" and was named a top album of 2008 by the Pitchfork staff.

Joining him will be the FIXED DJ's JDH and Dave P, savvy selectors and trailblazing party promoters.

Friday, February 12, 6PM

SUPERTOUCH -- From the dissolution of the seminal NYHC pillar Death Before Dishonor came Supertouch, formed in 1985, a band that sought to prolong the spirit of cultural hybridization in hardcore. Vocalist Mark Ryan, a professed b-boy who had a brief flirtation with rap music, was a proponent of the merging between hip-hop and hardcore scenes, an attitude that fermented the success of crossover acts like the Beastie Boys and Anthrax. Their music preserved the ferocity of early DBD, but embraced the concepts of groove and contrast that allowed them to stand out above the rest. An original pressing of their LP The Earth Is Flat is considered one of the prized rarities in hardcore.

"There are plenty of theories regarding the resurgence of disco as a dynamic force in nightlife over the past several years. Some say that the music never really went away—we just stopped using the name. Others say that younger clubbers can enjoy the music without having to deal with the sound’s less-than-cool connotations. (Those of a certain age will remember suburban moms taking disco-dance lessons in the wake of Saturday Night Fever. They may also remember disco records coming from such noted underground artists as Ethel Merman and Engelbert Humperdinck.) Still others say that it’s the economy, stupid—hard times always equal escapist entertainment, as much now as in the stagflation days of the late ’70s. The people behind the Discovery party, dedicated to disco and disco-tinged house, have a simpler hypothesis: In short, the music is fun." (TimeOut New York)

Slicing Up Eyeballs presents: The Godfathers with Frosting

Monday, February 14, 7:30PM

18+ // TICKETS Buy 2 get 1 FREE

THE GODFATHERS -- In 1985, when the guitar in British popular music was nearing extinction, Peter and Chris Coyne formed The Godfathers, a bold foil to the prevailing trends. They built their sound upon searing blues guitar riffs and crisp back beats, a style that was decidedly working-class and geared towards raucous pubs. They constructed their first LP Hit By Hit around singles they had released independently, resulting in worldwide acclaim and a deal with Epic Records. As a primary influencer of the dominant Britpop of the 1990’s, The Godfathers are one of the most important rock bands in the history of the UK, thus their dissolution in 2000 gave way to an inevitable reconstitution in 2008. Santos is excited to bear witness as this legendary outfit expands its legacy.
