Image   David Hilliard & David Rathman "Great Expectations"

On view: February 19 - April 2, 2011

Opening Reception: February 19, 2011, 6-8 pm

Great Expectations explores concepts of modern masculinity through two divergent mediums: photography and watercolor. Hilliard's distinctive command of a cinematic narrative is at once romantic and disconsolate, oftentimes crafting bittersweet vignettes that grapple with notions of sexuality, faith, mortality and nostalgia. Similarly, Rathman's mottled watercolors illustrate iconic emblems of strength and struggle, luminary and the underdog. Loosely rendered scenes beckon to their pop cultural origins – films, album covers and advertisements alike – while also acting as collated excerpts from a lost Americana memoir. Together, Hilliard and Rathman produce a sagacious survey of the tradition of hero-worship, and foster insightful tension between conventional and unorthodox imagery of virility. With a tempered use of cliché and common expectation, their work yields frank complexities often overshadowed by mythic constructs of machismo.

Further works may be seen on the exhibition page. A complimentary download of Mark Moore Gallery: Statements 7, featuring David Rathman can be obtained by clicking here. Image   Josh Azzarella "Works 2004-2011"

On view: April 9 - May 14, 2011

Opening Reception: April 9, 2011, 6-8 pm

Mark Moore Gallery is thrilled to present a career-to-date survey of works by video artist and photographer, Josh Azzarella.. Including a combination of manipulated photos, video and projection, Works 2004-2011 explores Azzarella's developments in practice, technique and content – and culminates with the debut of his seminal Untitled #105 (SFDF) (2011) multi-channel video installation. The recipient of the 2006 Emerging Artist Award from the Aldrich Contemporary Art Museum (CT), Azzarella has been heralded for his scrutiny of popular historiography. Oftentimes appropriating images from archival news media, he painstakingly modifies infamous moments in time as a demonstration of individual perception of communal events. Works 2004-2011 will be the artist's second solo exhibition with the gallery.

For a preview of the exhibition, please reference the exhibition page.
