Face
to Face - Contemporary Portraits by Samuel Ault
Face to Face by Samuel
Ault
21 February – 5 March 2011
Private View Tuesday 22 February, 6 – 8pm
The intimate portraits in this exhibition explore a diverse range of
expressions and colour. People's and animal’s faces are wonderfully
complex and multifaceted, but portraiture can reveal a moment of true
connection; a singular emotion or action.
Photographs are an essential
reference to Samuel Ault’s practice. They enable him to manipulate
the perspectives of the image and subject, whilst understanding and
experimenting with the complexities of the subject’s colour palette. The
tight cropping allows him to hone in on an emotion and eliminate
‘noise’. Ault’s paintings re-address traditional portrait
paintings, by introducing themes of a more ambiguous, yet somehow familiar
nature.
Samuel Ault studied Fine Art at
the University of
Wa
les Institute Cardiff, specialising in painting. He now lives in London
continuing his practice. He most recently had his work displayed at the
National Portrait Gallery in an exhibition called 'Hidden
Talents'.
