From February 19 through August 29, 2011, The Museum of Modern Art welcomes visitors to Material Lab, located in The Lewis B. and Dorothy Cullman Education and Research Building. Free with Museum admission, this new interactive space invites visitors to explore the process of art making by learning how materials commonly used by artists can be transformed through tactile, interactive, creative, and exploratory experiences.
One feature of Material Lab is Microsoft Digital Art Technology Preview, a realistic painting application that engages users in a digital painting experience that offers a multitude of colors, tools, and canvases. Other stations in the lab include Discovery Boxes inspired by works of artists and designers in the Museum's collection, a collage and assemblage table, and a found objects activity inspired by the work of artist Joseph Cornell.
KEY FEATURES
Microsoft Digital Art Technology Preview: This digital painting experience gives visitors the opportunity to experiment with the new Microsoft Digital Art Technology Preview, a new application developed by Microsoft. This realistic painting application allows artists of all ages to engage in a digital painting experience using a multitude of colors, tools, and canvases. This immersive digital painting experience provides realism and interactivity by incorporating touch, natural media modeling, and brush simulation technology.
Discovery Boxes: Visitors can touch and explore traditional and non-traditional materials that artists use to create their work. Visitors can create and experiment with materials in the boxes, which focus on works by artists and designers in MoMA's collection. Materials include paper, paint, metal, velvet, rubber, food, and more.
Collage/Assemblage Table: Using a variety of materials, visitors are invited to create works of art that they can take home, such as a collage of a musical instrument inspired by artworks in Picasso: Guitars 1912-1914.
Drawing Table: Explore texture and tone with basic drawing materials and changing prompts.
Light Table: Visitors can experiment with a variety of materials to explore light and shadow.
Cornell Boxes: Assemble found objects to create arrangements inspired by the work of Joseph Cornell.
Book shelf: Art-and material-focused books for children and adults are available at all times.

Friday, 10:30 a.m.–6:30 p.m.
Extended summer hours:
July and August, open Thursdays and Fridays until 7:00 p.m.
MUSEUM ADMISSION
$20 adults; $16 seniors, 65 years and over with I.D.; $12 full-time students with current I.D. Free, members and children 16 and under. (Includes admittance to Museum galleries and film programs). Target Free Friday Nights, 4:00–8:00 p.m.
