Burtch's paintings and drawings...are impossibly delicate, nuanced affairs, whose fine, almost maddening subtlety belies the controlled chaos of their making.”
-Art Critic, Shana Nys Dambrot.

My work is about motion. Working with porcelain clay creates an argument between the form and my hands. Together we work against one another; pushing and pulling, expanding and contracting, bending and shaping. Sculpting with porcelain clay is challenging because the texture is smooth, sticky, and wet. The clay is fluid to the touch yet unmalleable. The clay air dries over a period of months, before being fired in a kiln. The process of the firing is risky and hard to control rendering unpredictable results. The work is deceiving; the glaze is a metallic luster finish that looks sleek and strong, yet the porcelain forms are delicate creating tension between their appearance and their fragile nature.

Growing up on the plains of west Texas, I understood the notion of wide, open spaces. The tabletop landscape was dotted by the repeating shapes of telephone poles and petroleum tanks as they receded into the distance. It was the small things that gave the Llano its bigness. When I escaped and began to see more of the world, I was always attracted to the subtleties of places and situations: shapes of shadows, the color of sunlight, temperatures, etc. I noticed, as I began to paint, that memories of these things evolved; the details altered, thoughts and emotions edited. Have you ever looked at an old photo and realized you had remembered things completely different? My art has much to do with this sense of fleeting atmospheres. To me, the paintings are distilled records of ever-changing spatial events in my past and necessarily in my future.

I'm drawn towards nature imagery that depicts isolated elements in their continual struggle to flourish under desolate circumstances. The seemingly bleak, the empty landscape, speaks to me. It is in this silence that I see the never-ending waves of struggle, wearing down, and rebirth emerging.
