3 Minutes & 3 Questions with Biggs Picture Artist Jessica Whitehead.

Jessica Whitehead's painting, Meadow at Longwood, is one of the many works to be featured in the Biggs Picture exhibition, opening next Friday, March 4. Jessica, of Wilmington, took 3 minutes out of her time to chat with us about her work and landscape. Look for more 3 Minutes & 3 Questions series in upcoming Art Mail newsletter!.

Tell us about your work featured in the exhibition.

This piece is a rendition of a landscape near and dear to my heart, the meadow at Longwood Gardens, in Kennett Square, PA.  As a current Professional Gardener student at Longwood, I have the opportunity to intimately experience the gardens, and the meadow in autumn is one of my favorites.  In this particular landscape, I was struck by the dynamic shadows and golden late afternoon sunlight and wanted to create a real sense of perspective and movement throughout the piece.

What was the most inspiring landscape you've ever encountered?

When I was in high school, my father and I took a trip to Peru to see Machu Picchu.  On the day we visited the ruins, it was very foggy and almost all of the landscape was obscured by mist as we drove up the mountain side.  Once we reached the top, the fog suddenly lifted and I could see the whole ruins and surrounding mountains all at once.  It was very moving and felt almost spiritual.

What are you working on now?

I am working on several landscapes of the hills at Winterthur.  I drive by this landscape on my way to and from work every day and these pieces are somewhat of a fantasy interpretation of that space.  I'm really excited by the color and movement in these pieces.
