Woman Made Gallery is proud to present "Stree Jaati (A Community of Women)," with mixed media works by Priti Gulati Cox.

Commenting about her solo show, Cox writes, "In contemporary India, caste and class continue to shape the role of women in everyday life, and the rising power of corporations has only added to their burden. In 'Stree Jaati', I attempt to go behind the pressures imposed by both the state and patriarchy to show Indian women as human beings struggling for justice and basic dignity against all odds. To convey the contemporary reality in many of these works, I have relied on tribal and other traditional forms of geometry, drawing, and embroidery."

Priti Gulati Cox is a native of India. She has been living in Salina, Kansas since 2000. In 2008 she began work on a project titled Vanishing India. Beyond Salina, she has exhibited at the 2010 Women and Water Rights Exhibit at the Regis Center for Art in Minneapolis, the Birger Sandzen Memorial Gallery in Lindsborg, Kansas, the Thirteenth International Open at Woman Made Gallery, and the 2010 United States Social Forum in Detroit. Her next solo exhibition is in September 2011 at the Percolator Gallery in Lawrence, Kansas. For more information visit www.priticox.com.
