AGUS SUWAGE is one of the giants of Indonesian contemporary art and is among the most sought after contemporary artists from Southeast Asia. Over the past few decades, his works have been shown in a number of international biennials, such as the Asia Pacific Triennial in Brisbane, Australia (1996), the Gwangju Biennial (2000), and the Singapore Biennial (2006). He has been featured in almost 150 museum and gallery exhibitions around the world, and his works are included in most comprehensive collections of Southeast Asian contemporary art. In 2009, the Jogja National Museum in Indonesia devoted all three floors of its building to a major retrospective of Suwage’s works of the past 25 years, including paintings, sculptures, and installations. A 670-page monograph of his work, Still Crazy After All These Years, was recently published.
Suwage’s first US solo exhibition, The End Is Just Beginning Is the End, will be on view at Tyler Rollins Fine Art beginning March 3, with an opening reception for the artist on Thursday, March 10, from 6 – 8:30 pm. He will present an artist talk in the gallery on Saturday, March 12, at 3pm.
JALAINI ABU HASSAN (JAI) is one of Malaysia’s foremost contemporary artists. His work is infused with references to traditional Malay life and culture while being actively engaged in contemporary developments in Malaysia’s rapidly changing society. Jai will return to New York for his first US solo exhibition in over ten years, opening at Tyler Rollins Fine Art on April 28.
PINAREE SANPITAK is among the most compelling and respected Thai artists of her generation, and her work can be counted among the most powerful explorations of women’s experience in all of Southeast Asia. Her work will be featured in an upcoming group exhibition at the Asian Art Museum of San Francisco, opening in April. For PULSE, we show part of a new series of works based on her “flying cube” motif.
TIFFANY CHUNG is one of the most internationally acclaimed Vietnamese contemporary artists. She is noted for her sculptures, videos, photographs, and performance work that use a pop aesthetic to conjure hyperreal, candy-hued visions which displace the common historical traumatic representations of Vietnam. She will be a featured artist in the upcoming Singapore Biennale, opening in March.
