Gina Phillips Reviewed, Matthew Cox Closing Saturday
"Heroes and Villains", New Fabric Works by Gina Phillips Reviewed by Art Critic Doug MacCash

hv Heroes and Villains, New Fabric Works by Gina Phillips is reviewed in today's Times-Picayune by critic Doug MacCash and he did a video interview with Phillips in the gallery as well.

MacCash rates the show as "Wonderful".

"Gina Phillips is New Orleans' master of modern tapestry. She uses recycled fabric, colored thread and a quilter's sewing machine with a 10-foot reach to create some of the Crescent City's most interesting art. Her disquieting current exhibit at Jonathan Ferrara Gallery is a surreal, sometimes brutal vision of the exploration of the New World. The installation is made of dozens of small, oddly shaped tapestries scattered across the walls like fabric graffiti." - Doug MacCash

Heroes and Villains is a continuation of the visual narrative Gina Phillips began with her 2010 solo show, The Call of The Alluvial Empire, at the Isaac Delgado Fine Art Gallery at Delgdo College. Using a variety of media including fabric, thread, ink, paint, synthetic hair, glass beads, and feathers, Gina Phillips has created a story-telling installation that explores elements of innocence and brutality in primitive American culture in the Southern Delta.

Gina Phillips has a BFA from University of Kentucky and an MFA from Tulane University. Her work has been exhibited in galleries and museums across the country and her work is in numerous collections including University of Kentucky, Lexington, NASA, New Orleans Museum of Art, Ogden Museum of Southern Art, Frederick R. Weisman Art Foundation, Tulane University and House of Blues (various locations across US.)

Gina Phillips is an Adjunct Professor of Painting at Tulane University and also teaches public school children through The Ogden Museum of Southern Art's Artists and a Sense of Place Residency. Phillips is also included in a major survey of New Orleans art to be presented at Ballroom MARFA (March - August 2011) entitled "World According to New Orleans" curated by Dan Cameron.

About VOLTA NY

VOLTA NY is an invitational show of solo artists' projects presented by over 85 international galleries. VOLTA NY is the American incarnation of the successful young fair founded in Basel in 2005 and was conceived as a forum for tightly-focused artist offerings. Both Basel and New York fairs provide a showcase for current art production and relevant contemporary positions regardless of the artist or gallery's age.

By putting the focus back on artists through exclusively featuring solo projects, VOLTA NY promotes a deep exploration of the work of its selected projects, an opportunity for discoveries that move beyond those afforded by a traditional art fair. While many fairs provide a broader overview, with more represented artists in each booth, visitors to VOLTA NY compare the experience to a more focused series of intense studio visits.

A platform for challenging, often complimentary, sometimes competing ideas about contemporary art, the strictly solo format is what gives the New York fair its unique character.

Jonathan Ferrara Gallery is proud to announce that three JFG artists, Skylar Fein, Gina Phillips and Dan Tague, will be featured in a major group exhibition at Ballroom Marfa, March 18 - August 14, 2011.

About the Show

This spring, Ballroom Marfa will collaborate with curator Dan Cameron on The World According to New Orleans, a curatorial examination of the art and visual culture of New Orleans, with a particular focus on areas of overlap between self-taught and avant-garde tendencies. New Orleans' location at the geographic fringe of the continental United States, in close proximity to Cuba, Haiti, and Mexico, has generated a unique blend of distinctions between artistic genres and vernacular traditions, and each of the artists in the exhibition has produced work that in some way challenges many of these time-worn distinctions. The exhibition includes work by several artists who were self-taught, as well as documentary photographs and film that examine neighborhood and community expressions.
