 The Recipe Exchange Share Your Know-How14 May–9 July 2011

PRESS RELEASE

This May, Spacex will present fieldwork from The Recipe Exchange, an
ongoing project by artist Helen Pritchard. It has been developed off-site
and online since September 2010 in consultation with residents of two
villages in East Devon. This research-based exhibition will include a
schedule of dynamic events and activities developed in collaboration with
villagers.

Community cookbooks have existed since the 15th Century. The project draws
on this tradition, through which information was shared socially, and
expands the idea of what a recipe can be.

Through The Recipe Exchange, residents of Farringdon and Woodbury Salterton
have been encouraged to exchange their practical skills. Together with the
artist, they have developed an on and offline archive of tacit ‘know-how’.
This provides a common resource for residents to discover, share and reuse
knowledge in order to build, make and work together.

The exhibition will re-present a range of interesting ‘recipes’ in the form
of events and artefacts. Visitors will be encouraged to contribute, read,
modify and take home ‘recipes’ that offer ‘how-to’ instructions. ‘Recipes’
will cover a range of practical applications including cloning plants,
negotiating with land-owners and making clay pipes.

What does it mean to be open? Through open source and open data networks,
information about our communities and lives is increasingly available. The
Recipe Exchange presents the opportunity to debate ‘being open’ as a way of
‘being together’, exploring what happens when open source methods and
processes meet everyday life.

Bringing the project into a gallery environment will provide the
opportunity to reflect on the use of instructions as tools for initiating
community dialogue and collective action.
