The Urban Institute for Contemporary Arts (UICA) will host 19 Holes: Artist Designed Mini-Golf from March 5–31. Featuring 19 creative and inventive holes created by regional and national artists, designers, and businesses this exhibition was organized by UICA in cooperation with LaughFest, a “festival of comedy, performance, film, and a variety of seriously funny stuff that makes us laugh.” Proceeds raised from the event will support both the programs of UICA and Gilda’s Club Grand Rapids.
Admission Prices:
Non-Members – $8
UICA Members - $6
Children 12 & Under – $5
Children Under 4 – Free
UICA members are also invited to a members-only preview event on March 4, from 6 to 9 PM. The event is free to members or guests who become members at the event. The evening will include a putting clinic by Patti Butcher of Blythefield Country Club. Patti was named the 2010 Professional of the Year by the LPGA, in addition to being recognized several times by top golf authorities for excellence in teaching golf. “We’re happy to offer our members the experience of playing for free. We hope it encourages repeat visits over the course of the month. It’s a great way to have fun while supporting two great organizations at the same time,” stated Jeff Meeuwsen, Executive Director of UICA.? In addition, UICA will host a Family Fun Day on March 19 from 12 to 4 PM. Families will play a round of mini-golf and then design a hole of their own in a free hands-on workshop. Participants will construct their mini-hole from an assortment of wacky and wonderful materials provided.
Corporate and school group tee times are available Monday from 9 AM to 4 PM and Tuesday through Friday from 9 to 11:30 AM. Group tee times may be scheduled by contacting pr@uica.org or 616.454.7000 x 19.
In the past few years, artist designed mini-golf courses have been a trend among contemporary art institutions. In 2008, The Walker Art Center in Minneapolis received over 25,000 attendees to their six-month artist designed mini-golf event, called Walker On The Green. There have also been similar types of events in Salt Lake City, New Jersey, New York and Columbus.
