"Excellence doesn't come with a price tag." —Kate Fowle
“Refresh (F5)," we might have called it—the Philadelphia Curatorial Intensive took place at The Pew Center for Arts & Heritage from October 2010 through January 2011, a partnership between the Philadelphia Exhibitions Initiative and Independent Curators International
(iCI). iCI is a catalytic organization, connecting emerging and established curators in order to incite fresh and independent thinking about curating. The organization came to Philadelphia to work with participants from eight local arts establishments, among them the Institute of Contemporary Art, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, and Vox Populi. Working directly with Kate Fowle, Executive Director of iCI, these curators were encouraged to rethink their assumptions and methods of curating exhibitions and to consider new ideas about audience engagement.
In an exclusive Center Conversations interview, Fowle tells us more about the Philadelphia Curatorial Intensive—the overall goals of the program, what she’s learned about art and exhibitions in Philadelphia, and how the general public might feel the program’s impact in time. She stresses how crucial it is for all curators to “take a step back from their day-to-day work environments” and think about new models of engagement and exhibition-making. “It’s very important for people to have the opportunity for lifelong learning,” she says.
