Scandinavian avant garde books, some limited edition prints by Roth and
others, exhibition posters and unique items, a small collection of Czech
Samizdat (underground illegal) books from before the velvet revolution, our
remaining conceptual art books not so far listed and books and documents
relating to Scottish contemporary artists and art events as well as a few
new ephemeral items.

Abramovic, Marina
SIX VINTAGE PHOTOGRAPHS OF THE ARTIST PERFORMING "RHYTHM 2" 1974
Six black and white vintage photographs (each 9.5 x 6 or 6 x 9.5cm) taken
by an unknown photographer of Abramovic's famous (or rather infamous)
performance piece where the artist swallowed anti-schizophrenic neuroleptic
pills and thus voluntarily experienced the frightening consequences. Her
body, firstly, suffered a period of catatonia and then, after a second
pill, she collapsed and became unconscious. The first photograph displays
the artist calmly sitting at the beginning of the work and each proceeding
image shows Abramovic becoming increasingly disturbed. One of these
photographs was used for the reproduction in a collective exhibition
catalogue PASSEPART (Edinburgh / Dublin / Belfast / Glasgow: Fruitmarket
Gallery and others, 1975 a large format exhibition catalogue which in part
documents the performance). The six photographs are a prime document and
perhaps the sole direct photographic evidence of an important early
Abramovic work. Exceptionally rare documentation of an important work and
quite possibly unique. Fine condition. Images on request.

REAKTION VII
Aisbach: Verlaggaleria Leaman, 1983
31.5 x 26cm, plastic and metal ring binder (printed) content of a series of
original contributions from various artists - here Steve Wheatley has a
found text entitled 'On the slopes' where an extreme close-up of a letter A

eventually, as the image is reduced step by step on realises the A is from
the word Kilimanjaro. Susan Hiller has some pages of automatic writing,
John Furnival has some photographic visual puns, Dick Higgins has four
pages of visual poetry, Ruri - a photographic portrait of a forest,

AN ORIGINAL BAUHAUS DESIGN

(Bauhaus)
ZUM BAUHAUSFASCHING
Weimar: Bauhaus-Universitat, 1930
Triangular when folded - approx 15 x 8cm, unfolded 32 x 14cm, orange and
black on white paper. An example of Bauhaus community design by an unknown
hand but in the recognisable house style - the all, to promote one of a
number of traditional 'Karnivals' common in that part of Germany - such
public events having a radical tradition: namely an equality between all
taking part since the class origins of participants were hidden by the
costumes donned. This leaflet/broadside has been designed to be folded up
to create a triangle and is a sophisticated piece of design with very
strong typographic elements. Some tearing along one fold line and minor
wear to edges and rubbed lettering in places. One part of the page in the
centre is reinforced by additional paper. Otherwise very good and very
rare.

printed upon it. The card for this very early Fluxus event was printed and
then hand-cut using scissors! The text mentions 1974 and 1994 but this is

participant - Moorman - died in 1991).Very scarce.

STUKAS
Koln: Rene Block, 1967
31 x 41cm, black and yellow on white PVC, silkscreen. The work is one of a
series of faux stamps (complete with deckled edges) created by Brehmer
during the early years of the German version of the Pop art movement

the French, British or American movements - here a diving squadron of
attack airplanes (Stukas). This was one of 150 examples (complete edition)
by Brehmer. Slight waviness to bottom left and on the top right a few of
the teeth from the deckle are missing but over all this is a nearly VG
example of a rare item. Ref: Grafik des Kapitalistischen Realismus Brehmer

with no copyright restrictions once the disc was purchased. Limited
edition (mostly by a temporal aspect) - these are now greatly sought after
- all contents here being fine and complete apart from issue 12 alone which

CECI CELA OU RIEN
London: Nigel Greenwod Inc, 1973
Four separate 2pp, 10 x 15cm, postcards as designed by Broodthaers as a
mail art project for this show in London. Each card bears the title text
recto and verso "Marcel Broodthaers/This, that or.../ During six months"
and gallery details - however each of the four cards has an additional text
printed on them respectively - 'First Month', 'Second Month', 'Third Month'
and 'Fourth Month' in different colours. The cards were sent out from the
gallery (according to our source) at the beginning of each month to the
client list. Additionally we understand that only 4 of the putative 6
planned cards were printed and sent out - thus this is a complete set.
These cards are unmailed copies and are thus in fine condition. A very rare
almost unknown Broodthaers conceptual mail art item.

Demarco Gallery
A COLLECTION OF 18 DIFFERENT NEWSLETTERS AND PROMOTIONAL BROADSIDES FROM
THE RICHARD DEMARCO GALLERY - JANUARY 1971 TO JANUARY 1974 INCLUDING THE
GALLERY'S JOURNAL "PARASOL"
Edinburgh: Richard Demarco Gallery, 1971 - 1974
Regularly during its occupation and base at Melville Crescent Demarco's
gallery produced a wide range of materials to promote their activities
sometime taking on elements of a regular arts journal. Here we offer a
group of that emphemeral material. The collection comprises of:
ten publications from the gallery (January 1971 to January 1972 - missing
from the complete run are Feb 1971, Oct 1971 and Dec 1971) which are in a
calendar format and typically consists of a folded sheet which opens to 45
x 25.5cm and were printed in black and another (ever changing) contrasting
colour each month.
one issue of UMBRELLA (May 1972) which retains elements of promotional
material but also has more extensive articles and b/w images of artist's
and works. It is 48 x 42cm, 4pp (open size) but folded down to be a small
DL mailer.
Seven issues of PARASOL - the follow-up to UMBRELLA. Typically opening up
to 46 x 36cm, 2pp this again was folded to DL mailer size and was profusely
illustrated in b/w. The February 1973 issue which coincided with Edinburgh
Arts 1973 is in a 30 x 21cm, 8pp format and has a lengthy reports of a
Demarco guided art tour for Edinburgh's chattering classes in France,
Holland, Austria and Yugoslavia with many small b/w photographs. There is
also a preview of the important Edinburgh Arts Summer School.
Notable exhibitions noted herein (usually with a b/w reproduction of a
work) are Michael Craig-Martin (Jan 1971), John Berger (May 1971), Alastair
Michie (May 1971), Fleur Cowles (July 1971), Hamish Fulton (July 1971)
although this has no text nor image but only an emply box and dates,
Romanian Art Today (August 1971), Ed Ruscha and Stefan Wewerka (Nov 1971).
The Parasol October 1973 issue is dedicated to the Edinburgh Arts '73 and
opens out to display a massive 293 b/w portraits of participants (all
denotes by name or title).
Parasol Three (December 1972) has a short article regarding Beuys' sacking
as professor at Dusseldorf Art Academy and an article on Isla St Clair (!).
Parsol Nov/Dec 1973 is Italian art themed and includes Anselmi, Costalona,
Patelli and Perusini with b/w images of works and a group shot of the
artists all crowded onto a gondala in Venice.
All in all an intresting group of material - many of which are mailed
copies retained from the Fluxus artist Robin Crozier's archive and hand
addressed to him by Demarco. What is clear is the sheer variety of material
displayed at the gallery - sometimes it may be fair to say of a trite or
not very inspiring nature but when he got it right Demarco got it very
right.
All in VG or VG+ condition although some minor tears and the Italian
Parasol has some damp foxing marks. Scarce especially in a group.

without any typographic element. This is the former. Fine. Schwarz 396.

Fulton, Hamish
HAMISH FULTON AT THE DEMARCO GALLERY
Edinburgh: Richard Demarco Gallery, July 1971
24.5 x 15.5cm, 3pp (recto only) opens to 45 x 15.5cm. Printed black and
yellow on white. Promotional leaflet for the gallery which has a
announcment for the Fulton show for July 1971. This was a very early
exhibition by the walking artist (his first solo show was 1969 in Italy)
but here there are no other details other than the name, title and dates -
the box is empty for some reason (the box next to it is for Campbell
Macphail and there is an b/w image of a large rock and again no text - one
is tempted to suspect a printing and lay-up/design error. We simply don't
know. The major exhibition announced here seems to be for the Short Sleeve
Studio - a t-shirt manufacturers! Bizarre. Fine. Very scarce.

A 'FOUR SIDED RECORD'

(Giorno, John)
Burroughs, William S., Laurie Anderson and John Giorno.
YOU'RE THE GUY I WANT TO SHARE MY MONEY WITH
NYC: Giorno Poetry Systems (GPS 020-021), 1981

Giorno, John
RELEASE 1: A BENEFIT FOR THE JOHN GIORNO DEFENSE FUND
n.p. (NYC): John Giorno Defense Fund, n.d. (c. 1969)
35 x 22.2cm, 1pp. A double image printed blue on pink card with the title
text and a reproduced newspaper cutting of “Margaret Mead's for Legal Pot”
which was presumably regarded as positive support (from a respected
academic) for marijuana and hence support for John Giorno at a time when he
was being prosecuted for possession of illegal drugs. Giorno was an
associate of Andy Warhol - he was the subject of the film “Sleep” - and the
founder of Giorno Poetry Systems: a significant publisher of beat, pop and,
later, new wave poetry. This example of this scarce leaflet has a central
crease - but this is probably because it was intended to be separated into
two different leaflets (although the off centre printing typical of
hand-set brochures of the time would mitigate against that being a
particularly neat job). Otherwise very good, period document.

Hamilton, Richard
BATHERS
n.p. (London): n.p. (Robert Fraser Gallery), n.d. (1968)
10.5 x 15.5cm, 1pp. Hand painted/silkscreened postcard displaying an
original graphic by Hamilton of Whitley Bay bathers. Hamilton made some of
these cards as announcement cards for the exhibition but overran the cards
to create a small print. Very scarce indeed - one estimate is that fewer
than 100 were produced without gallery details verso (as here). Rather a
small wonder. Designated as an original print in the recent Hamilton
catalogue raisonnee and recent auction prices have been much higher than
here. This example has a small crease which is hard to see unless close up
which has bent the surface a little - but if framed it would be very hard
to notice. Priced to account for this minor flaw.

One of only 200 copies plus "several" unnumbered APs this being one of the
numbered copies (scratched and signed by Jones and dated on the underside
of the aluminium). The base of the box which held the sculpture is still
extant here but is torn along one fold but the sculpture is in fine
condition. From 'The Shoebox Portfolio'.

Jones, Allen
UNTITLED (JONES)
London: Petersberg Press, 1968
40 x 31.5cm. original eight colour silkscreen on gloss paper which is glued
to the box lid in which the Shoebox portfolio was packed. The image is
adapted from that of the trademark for a company which specialises in
producing leather boots - which by co-incidence is called Jones - hence
catching the artist's eye. The image of a foot is no longer that of a boot
however but a multicoloured sock along with various numbers as if colour
coded. Signed and dated "68" by the artist in pencil bottom right.
Strangely not noted in 'Jones Prints' although the rest of the portfolio
is. The print is still attached to the box lid (how it was issued) which
has tears at the folds but this does not affect the print at all and the
lid could easily be removed for framing - thus very good. From 'The Shoebox
Portfolio”.

UNTITLED POSTCARD SCULPTURE
Unique work. Paris, 1986.
15 x 14.5 cm. Original collage made up of two glued and cut postcards,
dated and signed by the artist on the rear. A small yet representative work
by the great Czech artist and concrete poet who created a number of unique
card works while living in Paris: in fact, Kolar's activities spanned some
five decades, his work in collage being his most prevalent. The two
commercial postcards have been employed by the cutting away of parts of
the upper card to expose the card beneath: here L'Arc du Triomphe has been
cut away to view a Swiss landscape beneath creating a new image entirely.

Musique Concrete
Schaeffer, Pierre, Pierre Henry and Philippe Arthuys
PANORAMA OF MUSIQUE CONCRETE
London: Sinetone AMR, 1955
Standard 12 inch LP in pictorial sleeve and inner sleeve. The first ever
release of electronic tape music, documenting the early experiments from
1948 to the early 1950s of the founding figures of the Groupe de Recherche
de Musique Concrete (aka the Groupe de Recherches Musicales or the
INA-GRM). Schaeffer, Henry, and Arthuys recorded "natural", non-synthesized
sounds like trains, instruments, factory machinery, small objects, voices,
bells, children's toys, etc., and created structured noise compositions by
cutting up the tape and changing its speed. Some pieces use an instrument
Schaeffer invented called the Phonogene, which used a keyboard to control a
series of motors that allowed the composer to transpose tape speeds on an
octave scale (a primitive precursor to the sampling keyboard). Included
here are Schaeffer's Railway Study: the world's first tape composition, and
Study for Whirligigs, Schaeffer's earliest work (pre-musique concrete) that
was produced using 8 turntables with locked groove records. This is an
extremely rare record and an important release. The record is in VG
condition with no noticeable problems in a VG sleeve.

Nadeau, Maurice
DEJINY SURREALISMUS
Prague: Edice Obelisk, 1972
30 x 21cm, 130pp (consisting of carbon copy pages all printed recto only
and very closely typed). Blue boards with gold letting on spine. First
edition of this Czech translation of Nadeau's elucidation of the activities
of the early surrealist movement from 1944 - written as a number of
self-contained essays. Surrealism was (somewhat absurdly given its own
history of support for communism) a proscribed movement under the Stalinist
puppet regime. Lengthy lists of surrealist journals are found at the back
of the publication for further reading along with a colophon noting that
only 100 examples of the book were published and that the book is "not for
sale". Minor wear at edges of boards but else fine. Rare.

Baladi, Roland
NAM JUNE'S FIRST TAPE
Edinburgh: Show and Tell Editions, 2002
Standard VHS Cassette tape in box with printed insert content of Baladi's
video investigation into Nam June Paik's mythical first video tape piece
(sometimes referred to as "The Pope Tape"). Paik picked up an early
portable video recorder and filmed the crowds attending the Pope's NYC
visit from a moving taxi. The tape was later shown that same evening to a
Fluxus event - Paik's tape is usually regarded as the very first use of
video in an art context. Baladi's investigation takes place in a yellow
cab touring the streets of New York while various possible sources of
information are quizzed over the telephone about the original art event.
Baladi's voice is joined by voiced responses in English from Nam June Paik
himself, Barbara London (the video curator at MOMA), Shigeco Kubota as well
as Don Foresta, Russel Connor and John Hanhart. The replication of Paik's
activity underscores the artist's urgent attempts to discover more about
this legendary event. Voiced in English with French sub-titles. Issued in
an edition of 30 tapes plus 2 A/Ps, the tape has both PAL and NSTC versions
allowing for viewing on both US and European VCRs.

AS THEY WORK TODAY WITH BRUSHES, VIOLINS & JUNK…'

Paik, Nam June
PRESS RELEASE FOR ELECTRONIC ART II BY NAM JUNE PAIK
NYC: Galeria Bonino, 1965
28 x 21.6cm, 1pp b/w. The first of a number of important shows at the New
York gallery where Paik brought a new aesthetic to the artwork utlising new
technology (video and tv set and later computers) to create various
ground-breaking installations. The gallery press releases are detailed
listings of the works and explain much of the background to the exhibitions
- here the installation included a 6 foot high tall robot controlled by a
'20 channel radio transmitter and 10 channel data recorder, 3 TV cameras
and 23 cathode ray screens, of which all the circuits are invented or
changed by Paik.' Short bio. Fine. Scarce.

Paik, Nam June and Charlotte Moorman
3RD FESTIVAL OF THE AVANT GARDE
NYC: (Moorman), August 25 - Sept 11, 1965
63.5 x 19cm, 2pp. Poster/programme for this the third of the Festivals that
Moorman created as an annual event of the Avant Garde. Typographic design.
The event was to grow (despite the later opposition of George Maciunas who
didn't want Fluxus artists to take part in the activities - with the Pope
of Fluxus even picketing the events) into a huge cornucopia of concerts,
visual exhibitions and intermedial installations - and also in increasingly
varied locations (an ocean liner, the twin towers, Shea Stadium, a train).
But here the location of the events was the much frequented (by Fluxus
types) Judson Hall on 165w 57st New York and in the programme here one
finds Nam June Paik's 'Action Music', Dick Higgin's 'Choreographic Theater'
and a themed Eric Satie evening. A highlight was John Cage's 'Theater
Piece' staged for five nights in a row alongside Allan Kaprow's
'Participation Happening' on the first night and with the Higgin's work the
next. Then Philip Corner ('Compositions'), and Kosugi ('Events') performed
the night after again with the Cage work followed by Mac Low's “Play” and
finally Al Hansen's 'Time-Space Drama'. (The Theater Piece itself was
performed nightly by Corner, Hansen, Gary Harris, Kaprow, Kosugi, Moorman,
Paik and Tenny). On the reverse is a design noting all the performers in
the festival utilising their facsimile autographs (as with many of the
posters for the annual event). This copy has been folded into eighths and
previously sealed (with a carefully opened paper seal) for mailing. A
scarce document.

events' were all to be performed 'at some opportune moment'. As were
Barbara & Peter Moore's 'Blessed Event', Paik's 'Zen Smiles' and Carolee
Schneemann's 'Something'. Despite Maciunas' later opposition to
participation in the Festival the programme thanks 'Fluxus Inc.'. A rare
document of what was clearly a special day-long event. Folded in half for

Vostell, Wolf
STARFIGHTER
Heidelberg: Edition Tangente, 1967
15 x 21cm, 4pp. Silkscreen inside folded card. Image size is 15 x 21cm.
Printed white on white with glow in the dark silkscreen ink: the image is
one of Vostell's most desirable that of a row of Nazi attack airplanes and,
as with his other prints in this series, undermines their threat by turning
them into a novelty format. One of only 150 signed and numbered copies and
now very hard to find. Ref: Grafik des Kapitalistischen Realismus Vostell

Whiteread, Rachel
HOUSE
London: Becks/Artangel, 1993
Standard 275ml sealed bottle of beer Issued by Becks Beer as part of their
series of artist designed beer bottle labels - here on the occasion of
Whiteread's famous (temporary) street sculpture which after the demolition
of the original derelict house's shell left a cast of the inside volume of
the dwelling. This work itself was also demolished despite a campaign to
retain what was an well received public sculpture (a frankly outrageous act
but typical of the UK local government's lack of enthusiasm for radical
art). Fine and one of the earliest Becks bottles.

ONE OF 300 COPIES

Whiteread, Rachel
DOOR KNOB
Berlin: Deutsche Giggenheim, 2001
14cm x 8cm x 8cm approx. moulded UV-resistant Technogel sprayed with black
polyurethane film in the shape of a two sided door knob. The work can be
twisted and manipulated and yet still it will return to its original shape.
Released in a signed and initialled edition (on a separate label) of only
300 pieces the work was produced during the "Transient Spaces" exhibition
in Berlin where most of the castings from an apartment displayed by the
artist were in solid white plaster - this bringing a different tactile
aspect to the artist's practice. A mint example and now enthusiastically
sought by collectors.

Wylie, George
LINE RESTING. UNIQUE WORK. 1988
165 x 170 x 120cm. Painted steel sculpture typical of Wylie's Glaswegian
sense of humour - this whimsical sculpture is clearly within the general
thrust of his great public works such as the giant Paper Boat and the
full-size steam train made from hay which were greeted by public and
critical acclaim during Glasgow's stint as European City of Culture. A thin
red steel line which twists around and around takes the chance of a wee
seat and rests its feet on a white chair. Formerly in the possession of the
Scottish popularist comic actor Russell Hunter.
