MEDIA ALERT: FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Feburary, 4, 2011
“This Land”
Solo Exhibition for Jack Spencer at Rebekah Jacob Gallery
(Color Photography)
On Friday, March 4, 2011 (5:30-8PM) in conjunction with the
art walk, JACK SPENCER will open “THIS
LAND,”an exhibition of color photography. “This Land”
is comprised of landscapes spanning the United States and includes many images
of South Carolina’s Low country. The series is representative of the time
Spencer spent from 2003 to 2005 while traveling throughout the United States and
Canada. Going from one city to the next, attending exhibitions of his work,
Spencer avoided interstate highways and got lost along backcountry roads. The
images he produced are carefully composed, simple, straightforward landscapes of
the towns and countryside he found along the way. Although the human element is
suggested through man made structures, virtually none of these works show
people, a departure from Spencer’s prior series, “Native Soil”
and “Apariciones”. The exhibition will be on view from March 1
through March 31.
The Artist on the series…“This Land started when
the war started in Iraq. It was almost a violent reaction to that. The early
photographs were torn and distressed. But it evolved into the idea that we live
in the magnificent land, albeit one with a lot of bones rattling around in the
closet”
ABOUT THE ARTIST…
Jack Spencer was born in Kosciusko, Mississippi, a land that has found its way
into many of his photographs. The precisely crafted prints poignantly tell the
story of the rural life in the America’s Countryside. Spencer is perhaps
best known for his series Native Soul that features deep sepia tones combined
with deep-South imagery: the humid bayou country, horses, and the everyday man
of the Mississippi River Delta. In 1999, they became the subject of his first
book also entitled “Native Soil.”. His images, often blurred, and
slightly manipulated-are very distinct from any other body of work about the
Carolina Low Country. The slightly out-of-focus quality of his photographs
is achieved by skillful manipulation of the printing process in the dark room,
when the negative is projected through transparent materials, thus distorting
the light. The prints are then varnished with subtle tones of earth-yellow or
earth-red pigments.
Spencer currently resides in Nashville, Tennessee. Jack is a self-taught
photographer who attended Louisiana Tech University. He work is in many
collections including: The Houston Museum of Fine Art, Berkley Museum of Art,
Sir Elton John’s Photography collection.
