NEW ExhibitionsLucy Pullen: The Cloud Chamber and Related WorksLucy Pullen situates her work in the unexpected terrain opened up when the disciplines of visual art, philosophy, and physical science meet. Working with engineers and astrophysicists, Pullen created two new sculptures to act as detectors that present cosmic rays as they pass through our earthly environments. Each geometrically specific chamber contains a distinct atmospheric condition. When a cosmic ray passes through The Cloud Chamber a contrail is formed. When a cosmic ray passes through The Spark Chamber, a spark ignites. Exhibited alongside the chambers are drawings and paintings of landscapes, in which the intentionally limited palette emphasizes light and shadow to create form. The juxtaposition allows Pullen to "make analogies" as she says between 'dark' matter and a shadow, aesthetic and quantum events, and a cosmic and an aesthetic mark. READ MORE

Shadows of a Fleeting World: Pictorial Photography and the Seattle Camera Club
North Galleries
February 12, 2011 - May 8, 2011
In the early years of the 20th century a group of talented Japanese immigrants in Seattle took up the practice of pictorial photography. During that time, Japanese-American pictorial photographers were so numerous on the West Coast that they formed large camera clubs, particularly in Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Seattle. They produced work that was published widely and exhibited in national and international competitions.
Shadows of a Fleeting World presents over 100 works by Seattle Camera Club photographers and others in the Seattle area who worked in the pictorial style during the movement's heyday. READ MORE

Vortexhibition Polyphonica Opus IV Stroum Gallery Through March 13
Opus IV continues to explore the rich relationships that can arise between objects and ideas as it blends the first three versions with a range of newly installed art works. Echoes of the previous iterations form the constant thread with which the new choices resonate. In Opus IV, Curator Sara Krajewski incorporates a number of recent acquisitions from the collection of Safeco Insurance, a member of the Liberty Mutual Group, and the Washington Arts Consortium. Additionally, as part of the polyphonic intention of the exhibition, Curator of Collections Judy Sourakli includes a selection of aprons from the Costumes and Textiles Collection. Together these additions will round out this final iteration of Vortexhibition Polyphonica.
