Jo Babcock has an unusual skill. He has made
hundreds of functional cameras out of random objects and containers -- including
coffee cans, suitcases, guitar cases, Band Aid boxes and even a VW
bus.

Babcock uses each home-made camera to create a single
photograph. Often the container seeks out its real-world companion -- a log
cabin maple syrup tin locating an actual log cabin, a coffee urn camera
discovering a neon coffee pot sign. Some pairings allow the viewer to suspend
disbelief and become the object -- as a Band Aid box viewing its patient, a
detergent box studies a coin-operated washing machine, a gasoline can observing
an
abandoned gas
station.
In the series exhibited, each camera and unique print are presented and
offered together as a one-of-a-kind paired set, keeping their relationship
intact.
Babcock's work has been shown internationally, including
exhibitions
at the Brooklyn Museum, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, and the Sao
Paulo
Biennial. His book, The Invented Camera, showcases many of his cameras
and the images they have
produced.
This will be his first solo exhibition in Los
Angeles.
