In celebration
of Los Angeles Fashion Week, Stephen
Cohen Gallery is pleased to announce FashionSense,
a group exhibition of photographs highlighting a spectrum of 20th Century
fashion styles and photographic processes. The exhibition will also serve as a
back-drop for Artist Editions: Works on Couture, an
installation by fashion designer Mary Jo Matsumoto, on view from Thursday, March
17 through Saturday, March 26. There will be a reception for Artist
Editions, with the designer and artists attending on Thursday, March 17,
from 6 to 9
p.m.
FashionSense
The exhibition will highlight some of
the most important names in fashion working from the
1920s to the present, and will include photographs ranging from traditional
silver prints to long-extinct color processes, such as the color carbro and the
Vivex print. The exhibition will showcase portraits of designers and other
tastemakers in the fashion industry, along with a select number of images taken
by the photographers whose own work brought many provocative designs to an
attentive, and ever-expanding public. Artists will include Horst P. Horst,
Edward Steichen, Louise Dahl-Wolfe, Lillian Bassman, Arthur Elgort, and Dennis
Hopper.
Artist Editions, Works on
Couture
Employing state-of-the-art technology to
fuse contemporary art with intricate high fashion, Matsumoto used the work of
five contemporary artists to create five couture looks. As she describes,
“We’re living in a time of convergence, where many mediums are
overlapping and merging with contemporary art and creating new results. How do
you categorize a photograph of a painting printed on fabric and sewn into a
couture design?” This exhibition will showcase the creative
relationship between art and fashion. A limited number of pieces will be
available through the gallery and on-line at www.maryjomatsumoto.com.
A reception will be held on
Thursday, March 17, 2011 from 6 – 9
p.m.
Gallery hours are Tuesday
through Saturday from 11 a.m. – 6 p.m., and by appointment. For
additional information on the exhibition, please contact Mario DeFlice at
323.937.5525, or by email at: mario@stephencohengallery.com.
