Life Savers, 2010, Cut glass mosaic on carved polyurethane foam, 6" h x 15" w x 6" d
Skidmore Contemporary Art is delighted to present an exhibition of new work by the well-known California Pop Art sculptor Jean Wells. Since her debut in 2007 with her life size Urban Fruit Tree at the San Diego Museum of Art, Wells’ work has beguiled viewers in gallery exhibitions and art fairs internationally.
Working in cut glass mosaic, Wells creates glittering larger-than-life sweets ranging from Lifesavers to a slice of cherry pie as well as a shining array of giant fast food and beverages. For her first one-person show at Skidmore, she includes works from her new series which comments on art making itself. There are 4 ˝' tall 'color blind' crayons bearing contradictory labels, a pop gun with a white flag that bears the word 'Pop!' and a paintbrush loaded with dripping red paint.
