AARON DWORKIN: METAMORPHOSIS
As founder and President of the internationally acclaimed Sphinx Organization and President Obama’s first member of the National Council on
the Arts, spoken work artist Aaron Dworkin continues to retain his personal “artistic hat”, exploring the modern aesthetic through the prism of multi-media presentation involving visual art, spoken word, and music.
This unique forum offers a synthesis of various arts forms and genres, offering an autobiographical sketch through Dworkin’s poetry, in synergy with classical music and photography. A wide variety of selections tell the artist’s personal story: offerings range from the perspective of a young boy visiting a concentration camp in “Dachau”, with the music of Barber’s timeless Adagio, to his reflections on a recent loss of his mother through “Picture Perfect”. The program will also showcase some a capella selections, authored by Dworkin. Familiar sounds of Beethoven and Massenet morph into a new multi-sensory experience, narrated by the Artist, who embodies diversity and innovation.

NERD NITE: FIVE YEAR ANNIVERSARY!
It’s our Nerd Nite NYC FIVE-YEAR ANNIVERSARY…crazy! Please come help us celebrate. How? Well, we’re going to blend some new presentations with a few old classics and magic. Yes, magic. And who doesn't love surprises?
Presentation #1
Who Let the Dogs Out? Out?
by Ben Sisto
Description: What won’t Meatloaf do for love? And more importantly, who let the dogs out? These are big questions for which pop music never told us the answers. While we may never know the answer to the former, learn from someone who has some insights regarding the dogs. This media-rich presentation will trace the history of the question-at-hand from its international success in the early 2000′s and back to its mid-80′s Miami Bass roots.
Bio: Ben Sisto is the Programs Director for Public Assembly, which fittingly occupies the former home of Galapagos. He’s spoken at gatherings such as Open Video Conference, World’s Fair Use Day, and Spectre: Event Horizon, and has been in some group shows at Artists Space, Printed Matter, Harvard, etc.
Presentation #2
Rock and Roll Ripoffs, Reinventions, Regurgitations, and Reduxes
by Nora Morrison
Description: The classic tale about 1950s pop music states that unscrupulous white musicians ripped off African American performers’ music and made a fortune. In many ways, yes. But cover songs were much more than just theft. Through cover songs, musicians exchanged ideas across boundaries of genre, race, geography, gender, era, and style. Rock musicians repurposed, mimicked, borrowed, rewrote, and rejected other musicians’ work via the cover song. So how did a French-Creole Haitian folk song turn into Little Richard’s “Keep a-Knockin’”? It’s complicated.
Bio: Nora is a fellow and lecturer in music at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, where she works mainly on 20th century pop and jazz. She is a veteran of the first Nerd Nite, where she presented on Michael Jackson’s messianic self-portrayal in his videos. It brings her great delight to be able to discuss more falsetto screams with her fellow nerds.
Presentation #3
Not going to say. But the historical significance of this presentation within Nerd Nite lore cannot be understated.

“Charmingly simple story of The Little Tramp who meets a lovely blind girl selling flowers on the sidewalk who mistakes him for a wealthy duke. When he learns that an operation may restore her sight, he sets off to earn the money she needs to have the surgery. In a series of comedy adventures that only Chaplin could pull off, he eventually succeeds, even though his efforts land him in jail. While he is there, the girl has the operation and afterwards yearns to meet her benefactor. The tear-inducing closing scene, in which she discovers that he is not a wealthy duke but only The Little Tramp, is one of the highest moments in movies.”
