Artists Talks - David Cushway and Sai Huan Kuan

Thursday 10 March - 6pm

In the Cinema.

Aberystwyth Arts Centre is currently hosting an Artists' Residency Programme.  Two Artists will be based in the newly built studios designed by the award winning Thomas Heatherwick, for a period of 3 months throughout the year.  As part of the residency, each artist will give an informal talk about their work.

David Cushway:  "For over twenty-five years, I have been fascinated with clay as a material, and how it is intrinsically linked to all aspects of our lives. From birth, day to day living, and to death, clay and the ceramic process has been fundamental to our cultural existence since the first human beings developed the skills to use it. The history of ceramics is the history of humanity. It defines humankind's aspirations and cultural development; it is the material that binds us to the earth that we inhabit. It is what we come from and what we ultimately return to."

Sai Huan Kuan:  "My work often explores the dynamic void between space and time. To break down and transform a space and to dismantle and reconstruct materials and objects, are the important relearning processes in my creation of art. This playful yet adventurous making process provides an opportunity for me to revisit my social and cultural memory and experience."

Anerchiadau gan Artistiaid Preswyl -

David Cushway a Sai Huan Kuan

Yn y sinema.

Ar hyn o bryd mae Canolfan y Celfyddydau Aberystwyth yn cynnal Rhaglen Artistiaid Preswyl.  Bydd dau artist yn gweithio yn y stiwdios newydd, a ddylunwyd gan gwmni adnabyddus Thomas Heatherwick, am gyfnod o dri mis gydol y flwyddyn.  Fel rhan o'r cyfnod preswyl bydd pob artist yn rhoi anerchiad anffurfiol am ei waith.

David Cushway:  "Ers dros bum mlynedd ar hugain, ‘rwyf wedi ymddiddori mewn clai fel deunydd, a sut mae'n gysylltiedig â phob agwedd o'n bywydau. O ddydd ein geni, yn byw o ddydd i ddydd, ac hyd at farwolaeth, mae clai a'r proses serameg wedi bod yn sylfaenol i'n bodolaeth ddiwylliannol ers i'r dynion cyntaf oll dysgu'r sgiliau sut i'w ddefnyddio. Hanes serameg yw hanes dynoliaeth. Mae'n diffinio uchelgais a datblygiad diwylliannol dynolryw; clai yw'r deunydd sy'n rhwymo ni i'r byd yr ydym yn byw ynddo.  ‘Rydym yn deillio o hwn, ac yn dychwelyd ato yn y pendraw."

Sai Huan Kuan: "Mae fy ngwaith yn aml yn archwilio'r gwagle deinamig rhwng gofod ac amser. Y prosesau pwysig i mi wrth greu celf yw i dorri i lawr a thrawsffurfio gofod, ac i dorri i lawr ac ailadeiladu deunyddiau a gwrthrychau.  Mae'r proses creu hwn, sy'n chwareus ac eto'n fentrus, yn rhoi'r cyfle i mi i ail-ymweld â'm cof a phrofiadau cymdeithasol a diwylliannol."
