March 12 - April 22, 2011
Opening reception: Saturday, March 12th - 6:30 - 9:30pm
The show GREEN WORKS at Project 4 Gallery features artists who remove paint from their palette and look to the recycling bin for their medium and inspiration. Wood recovered from construction sites, plastic utensils retrieved from a back alley, bottle caps, junk mail, recycled aluminum, and paper made with site-specific ingredients replace traditional artist materials.
The featured artists Heidi Fowler, Sayaka Ganz, Julia Anne Goodman, and Duncan Johnson create extraordinary pieces that capture the grace and beauty of the natural world using man-made and found objects. The origin of the material gives the artwork a multidimensional quality providing an opportunity for us to see the value and possibilities in ordinary objects.
Heidi Fowler explores the juxtaposition of nature, man, and the divine in her ethereal bottle cap landscapes. By incorporating recycled materials, collected in part by her community, Fowler addresses concepts of consumerism and stewardship.
Sayaka Ganz transforms discarded objects such as plastic and metal utensils into imaginative sculptures that capture movement in the natural world. Ganz’s ability to articulate motion convincingly allows plastic forks and pasta strainers to come alive.
Julia Anne Goodman connects with her environment by casting it in paper. Chain saw marks and termite patterns on tree trunks are preserved like fossils with casting paper made from site-specific ingredients. Pieces of nature are temporarily frozen in time.
Duncan Johnson blurs the line between sculpture, drawing, and painting in his enigmatic assemblages of discarded wood gathered from landfills and construction sites in Vermont. The color and texture of the weather worn wood offers a sense of history and depth to his compositions without being explicit.
GREEN WORKS will be on view at Project 4 Gallery March 12 to April 22, 2011 with an opening reception on Saturday, March 12, 6:30 pm - 9:30 pm. There will be a special Earth Day Event and Closing Party on April 22, 2011 from 6:30 pm - 9:30 pm.
