MEDIA RELEASE: THE SINGAPORE BIENNALE 2011 OPENS ITS DOORS TO ONE AND ALL

Singapore, 11 March 2011
THE SINGAPORE BIENNALE 2011 OPENS ITS DOORS TO ONE AND ALL
161 works by 63 artists from 30 countries to be featured
The third edition of the Singapore Biennale (SB2011) opens its doors to the public from this Sunday, 13 March to 15 May 2011. Led by Artistic Director Matthew Ngui and curators Russell Storer and Trevor Smith, SB2011 Open House is organised by the Singapore Art Museum (SAM) of the National Heritage Board and supported by the National Arts Council, Singapore. 63 artists from 30 countries are presenting 161 works across four exhibition venues – SAM and SAM at 8Q, the National Museum of Singapore, Old Kallang Airport and Marina Bay.
The exhibition title, Open House, is conceived not as a theme but as an invitation. It examines the often fiercely guarded boundaries between public and private, and the manner in which differences may be bridged through interaction and exchange. Focusing on the process of making art rather than defining its final destination, SB2011 looks at these artistic journeys in relation to the ordinary transactions and encounters we participate in every day.
With its focus on artistic processes, the third Singapore Biennale marks the highest proportion of artists to date who are presenting new site-specific commissions or premieres –34 artists or 54 % of all participating artists. It also has the strongest Asian and local representation to date, with more than 40% of the artists (27 out of 63) hailing from Asia and nine Singaporeans artists in all.
Artistic Director Matthew Ngui and his team state, “We make sense of our surroundings based on the context we are in. Similarly, our focus on contemporary artistic process is also related to the everyday urban environment from which they come. As we lower our defenses and begin to appreciate the exchanges of ideas and viewpoints, we will come to realise how art can create possibilities, crossing thresholds and borders between private and public, at home and the city.”
Artists include Candice Breitz, who will be premiering her entire multi-channel video installation Factum at SAM at 8Q, in which seven sets of identical twins (and one set of identical triplets) speak candidly about their lives; and Martha Rosler, whose community garden project at Old Kallang Airport, realised in collaboration with the local artists, students and community groups, considers particular histories and narratives of Singapore. Other participating artists include Charles Sandison,Elmgreen & Dragset, Martin Creed, Phil Collins and Rafael Lozano-Hemmer. (For a complete list of participating artists, please refer to Annex A)
BIENNALE OUTREACH
SAM has expanded the educational and outreach efforts of the Biennale to make the event more accessible and increase the participation of young people in its making. For the first time, the Biennale carries special youth captions to enhance the viewing experience of both adults and our young visitors, and will also provide a downloadable educator’s kit to aid teachers in bringing and guiding their students through the Biennale.
The Biennale’s key year-long outreach project, Self-Portrait, Our Landscape (SPOL), will be shown at Old Kallang Airport. More than 3000 students from over 40 primary and secondary schools participated in this project which encouraged them to draw their self-portrait but without drawing out their own faces. Another project is the Young Art Writers Programme, where participants were given the opportunity to work with established writers and celebrated curators in an activity developed for students to respond to artworks in an exhibition. Selected entries will be published on various channels. These two initiatives are aimed at cultivating creativity and critical thinking amongst youths in Singapore, and fit in with SAM’s long-term goal of growing artistic appreciation in Singapore.
SB2011 OPEN HOUSE VERNISSAGE
A list of activities has been lined up for the opening weekend of the Biennale. Key highlights of the SB2011 Open House Vernissage include a special Reception at Marina Bay today, the Open House Party at Old Kallang Airport on 12th March and a weekend-long programme of artist talks and performances. Artist Martha Rosler will give a keynote address on 12th March.
The Reception atMarina Bay will see theofficial launch of The Merlion Hotel, the creation of acclaimed Japanese artist Tatzu Nishi and one of many key commissioned pieces of SB2011. Besides the artist himself, present at the event will be Prof. Edwin Nadason Thumboo, Cultural Medallion (Literature, 1979), Emeritus Professor, Department of English, Languages & Literature, Faculty of Arts & Social Science, National University of Singapore; Visiting Professor, Department of Chinese, Translation and Linguistics, City University of Hong Kong. Guest-of-Honour, Prof. Edwin Thumboo, will recite his seminal poem Ulysses by the Merlion at the Reception to mark its opening.
True to the Biennale title of Open House, for the first time after over five decades, Old Kallang Airport will welcome members of the public once again for the Open House Party. Open to all, this is a rare opportunity for Singaporeans to relive fond memories of Singapore’s first civil airport while taking in the works at the venue.Mr. Lui Tuck Yew, Minister for Information, Communications and the Arts, will grace the event as Guest-of-Honour for the Official Opening and Open House Party. Providing music accompaniment as the public take in the works, six live acts have been lined up for the day, including local musicians The Observatory, Vanessa Fernandez, Shirlyn Tan, as well as DJ HAS and DJ KFC, who will be entertaining the crowd from 6.30pm onwards.
A series of curators’ and artists’ talks and tours will also be held for the public on 12th and 13th March at various Biennale sites. A total of 35 informative talks, performances, discussions and keynote lectures, along with the Singapore premiere of film maker Tan Pin Pin’s The Impossibility of Knowing, are scheduled to take place during the opening weekend of the Biennale. (Please refer to Annex F for the complete list of talks and programme line-up)
OPEN HOUSE MENUS AT SB2011
Coming on board in celebration of the Biennale is popular Singapore bakery BreadTalk, a partner of SB2011. BreadTalk will launch limited edition Biennale Buns, available at BreadTalk outlets island-wide throughout the duration of the Biennale. (Please refer to Annex G for more details on the Biennale Buns) A café will also be set up in the Old Kallang Airport grounds, and visitors will be able to enjoy food and beverages at the Toastbox Biennale when they visit the venue. The restaurant Food for Thought at SAM at 8Q will also be creating a special Biennale Menu, inspired by a food installation by Malaysian artist Roslisham Ismail aka Ise, which centres on how six diverse Singaporean families think about buying, cooking and eating food.
Director of the Singapore Art Museum, Mr. Tan Boon Hui says, “We are very pleased to organise the third Singapore Biennale. SAM strives to nurture the development of artists and to promote awareness and appreciation for contemporary art. This is very much aligned to the objectives of the Singapore Biennale. Under the artistic direction of Matthew Ngui and his curators, coupled with the pool of immensely talented artists, we are confident that SB2011 will offer visitors a thoroughly enjoyable, eye-opening and thought-provoking experience. Welcome one and all, the doors are open.”
The Singapore Biennale 2011 will be open to members of the public from 13March to 15 May. Tickets are available at Singapore Art Museum and SAM at 8Q, National Museum of Singapore and Old Kallang Airport.

About the Singapore Biennale
The Singapore Biennale was established in 2006 as the country’s pre-eminent platform for international dialogue in contemporary art. It places Singapore’s artists within a global context, and fosters productive collaborations with the international arts community. In this way, the Biennale provides new opportunities for local visual artists, arts organisations and businesses, and cultivates deeper public engagement with the arts. It complements achievements in other areas of arts and culture, collectively enhancing Singapore’s international profile as a vibrant city in which to live, work and play. Singapore Biennale 2011 is organised by the Singapore Art Museum of the National Heritage Board, and supported by the National Arts Council, which first inaugurated the Biennale in 2006 and was also the organiser for the 2008 edition.
About the Singapore Art Museum
The mission of the Singapore Art Museum (SAM) is to document, interpret and promote the contemporary art practices of Singapore and the Southeast Asian region. Opened in January 1996 as a museum under the National Heritage Board of Singapore, SAM has amassed one of the world’s largest public collections of modern and contemporary Southeast Asian artworks. Since 2009, SAM has focused its programming and collections development initiatives around contemporary Southeast Asian art and art practices. Through strategic alliances with arts and cultural institutions and community organisations, SAM facilitates visual arts education, exchange, research and development within the region and internationally. SAM is also the organiser of the Singapore Biennale 2011.
About the National Arts Council, Singapore
The National Arts Council was established in September 1991 to spearhead the development of the arts in Singapore. To realise its vision of developing Singapore into a distinctive global city for the arts, NAC provides total support to nurture artistic talent, promotes the practice and appreciation of the arts among Singaporeans, builds up capabilities and resources, facilitates internationalisation and advocates the value of the arts. Through its holistic range of programmes and initiatives to develop the entire arts value chain, the Council champions the growth of a vibrant arts sector where the arts are accessible to all, and the community of artists, arts groups and arts businesses can innovate, excel and achieve sustainability in the long term.

Open house Precis
Featuring over 60 artists from 30 countries, the third Singapore Biennale, titled Open House, will be open to the public from 13 March to 15 May 2011. Over half of the artists are creating new commissions or premiering new works. Open House is presented across four exhibition venues, each with their own particular character, that draw upon emblematic spaces in Singapore: Housing Development Board flats (Singapore Art Museum and 8Q), shopping centres and night markets (National Museum of Singapore), and international air and sea ports (Old Kallang Airport). Major art works at Marina Bay will amplify individual experience in the city.
In Singapore, at Hari Raya, Deepavali and Chinese New Year, people open theirhomes to others, inviting them to visit, eat and talk. This is not only a gesture of hospitality and good will but also an opportunity to reflect, negotiate and exchange. The threshold between the private and the public is made permeable, if only for a moment, relaxing boundaries between individuals and barriers between groups.
Contemporary art often emerges out of a need to communicate across such thresholds of difference that may be experiential, psychological, or grounded in social and political hierarchies. As such, artists’ practices are not simply about something in the world, they are real attempts to exchange information, translate experiences and even trade places. Borders may be guarded with force, yet artists find ways to embed themselves within such systems of control, turning unspoken desires toward unexpected ends. Sometimes artists displace or exchange objects, materials and information from one context to another, revealing unexpected connections between culturally divergent situations. The labour of constructing or deconstructing common objects and materials highlight the creative potential in seemingly mundane situations, suggesting fresh ways of seeing the world.
Open Houseexamines these artistic processes and their links to the daily transactions that take place between people. From trading objects to swapping stories, from sharing food to dressing up, we are constantly making exchanges, as individuals, groups, cities and nations. In the world’s busiest port, a multicultural city built on trade, Open House brings together artworks that offer multiple perspectives and myriad creative approaches to questions of how we move across borders, see other points of view, and form connections with others.

About the Exhibition Venues
SINGAPORE ART MUSEUM and SAM AT 8Q
The Singapore Art Museum (SAM) opened in January 1996 as the country’s national art museum. It holds one of the world’s largest public collections of modern and contemporary South East Asian art, as well as growing holdings of international art. Its exhibition programme is primarily focused on contemporary South East Asian art, in keeping with its mission to preserve and promote the contemporary art of Singapore and the region. SAM is housed in the former St Joseph’s Institution building, which was built in 1867, with extensions added in the early 1900s. Its 8Q wing, named after its location at 8 Queen Street, occupies the site of the former Catholic High School’s primary school building, and officially opened in August 2008.
NATIONAL MUSEUM OF SINGAPORE
The National Museum of Singapore has a history dating back to 1849, when the Raffles Library and Museum was established. It was housed in several venues before moving to its permanent site on Stamford Road in 1887, and was renamed the National Museum at independence in 1965. Since then, its focus has shifted from zoological and ethnographic collections to the social and cultural history of Singapore, and was renamed the Singapore History Museum in 1993. After a three-year redevelopment, the new National Museum of Singapore opened in 2006. Its programme includes major touring exhibitions, festivals and film screenings, and its Singapore History and Living Galleries offer unique and innovative ways of presenting Singapore’s history and culture.
OLD KALLANG AIRPORT
Kallang Airport was Singapore’s first civil airport, opening in 1937. Built on reclaimed swampland along the Kallang River, it also included an anchorage for seaplanes, and was described at the time as the finest airport in the British Empire. It served as a military airbase during World War II, and reverted to its civil function after the war until 1955, when it was replaced by a new airport at Paya Lebar. From the 1960s until 2009 it provided the headquarters for the People’s Association, a community organisation established by the government to promote social cohesion and active citizenry. The old runway was transformed into Old Airport Road.
MARINA BAY
Marina Bay was formed through large-scale land reclamation projects that began in the 1970s. It transformed the mouth of the Singapore River into an urban amphitheatre, creating the centre of the city’s financial and cultural precincts and a site for major events including National Day and New Year celebrations and the Formula 1 Singapore Grand Prix. Since the Marina Barrage was completed in 2008, Marina Bay has functioned as a freshwater reservoir, an important component of the city’s self-sufficiency program. Its constantly transforming landscape is symbolic of Singapore’s urban planning and hopes for the future.

The Singapore Biennale, established in 2006, is Singapore’s most internationally significant contemporary art event and the largest contemporary art exhibition in South East Asia. Initiated by the National Arts Council, the 2011 edition is organised by the Singapore Art Museum.
-
The Singapore Biennale has always worked with significant sites in Singapore, exploring the use of different venues in Singapore. SB2011 is no different, presented at the historic Kallang Airport, Singapore’s first civil airport, as well as the Singapore Art Museum, the National Museum of Singapore, and Marina Bay.
-
The Biennale demonstrates the diversity of contemporary art practice from around the world. In 2011, Open House will feature the work of 63 artists from 30 countries, with around half from Asia, particularly South East Asia.
-
The Biennale has consistently showcased the work of Singaporean artists, placing their work within an international context. For Open House, 9 of the 63 artists in the exhibition are from Singapore, the largest proportion to date, with most presenting works newly commissioned for the Biennale.
-
The commissioning of new works has been a significant component of each Biennale. For Open House, over half of the artists are presenting new commissions. A number of these works are developed in Singapore, working with local communities and responding to specific sites.
-
As part of the Biennale’s long-term commitment to developing and engaging local audiences, a number of public and education programmes have been developed. ‘Self Portrait, Our Landscape’ is a major drawing and animation project developed by Artistic Director Matthew Ngui to involve over 3,000 children from over 40 local primary and secondary schools in the Biennale. The final result will be presented as a major display at the Old Kallang Airport.
-
Public Programmes will involve children and families in activities that provide insight into artists’ works and creative processes. In other education outreach efforts, a free activity booklet will be produced and special wall texts will be developed for children. An educators’ kit will also be produced for teachers bringing their students to the Biennale.

Laksant
The laksa-infused ribbon-shaped croissant is a fusion creation symbolising the coming together of artists from the east and west for the Biennale. Retail selling price is S$1.70.
