Please join us for the opening of two new exhibitions

Exhibitions open Tuesday 15th March 2011 at 6pm.

MAIN GALLERY

OF THIS AND THAT – Andrew Verster

Verster has produced five distinct series that together form this exhibition entitled ‘OF THIS AND THAT’. There are medium and large-scale oils on canvas, 120 palm size sculptures – ‘Signposts’, pen and ink drawings – ‘People of Importance’ and ‘Remnants’ and an installation of cut-outs – ‘Sacred Memories’.

Within his career Andrew Verster has created a truly astounding body of work distinguished by constant innovation and transformation. With each new exhibition there is a sense of the new but also of consistency and maturation of common and enduring themes. Verster’s work often expresses an interest in the collective unconscious, dreams, symbols and their meanings. Andrew Verster is one of Durban’s most prolific and highly respected artists.

MEZZANINE GALLERY

ETCHINGS- Paul Painting

Paintings preoccupations centre around portrayals of the figurative body. Painting held a successful solo exhibition at the AVA Gallery in 2007 and has participated in group shows nationally, including the iArt and the Everard Read galleries.

More recently Painting has turned his attention to printmaking, specifically etching, under the tutelage of Judy Woodborne, and his work has been selected for group and solos throughout the Cape and Johannesburg. In this he has favored imagery that borders on the macabre and fantastical, qualified by a vein of dark humour and tragicomedy. Mug shots of vicious criminals rub shoulders with stuffed gorillas, concrete dinosaurs square off against burlesque wrestlers: a phantasmagoria of ill-starred misfits.
