Mermaid Theatre of Nova Scotia's magical puppetry will transport Leo Lionni's popular stories "Swimmy," "Frederick," and "Inch by Inch" from page to stage on Saturday, April 16, at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. at Pepperdine University's Smothers Theatre in Malibu.

The show is recommended for ages 3 to 8 and families.

Drawn from Lionni's exquisite Caldecott Honor Books, this trilogy brings to life the tiny fish that fends off danger using ingenuity, the poetic mouse that warms hearts, and the loveable inchworm that shares his facility for measuring absolutely everything.

The three stories are easily translated to puppet theatre through the gentle storytelling style that has earned international acclaim for Mermaid Theatre. The show features an assortment of innovative puppetry styles and imaginative lighting techniques as well as an original musical score.

Based in Windsor, Nova Scotia, Mermaid Theatre has delighted more than four million young people on four continents with its unique adaptations of children's literature. Founded in 1972, the company ranks among North America's most respected theatres for the young and has won widespread recognition for its important ambassadorial role.

Mermaid Theatre regularly crosses North America, and it has represented Canada in Japan, Mexico, Australia, England, Northern Ireland, Holland, Scotland, Wales, Hong Kong, Macau, South Korea, Singapore, Taiwan, and Vietnam. The award-winning company performs for 200,000 people annually and is currently one of Canada's most active touring organizations.

Patrons of the show are invited to attend Family Art Day in the Gregg G. Juarez Palm Courtyard, next to Smothers Theatre. It includes special art projects and Weisman Museum tours from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, April 16. Family Art Day is free of admission charge and open to the public.
